So it's that time! We started today with the weaning process to whole milk...FTW!
He had 4oz of a bottle this morning and has had breakfast, snacks, lunch, snacks, and almost a full sippy cup of whole milk the rest of the day. I'll probably give him a bottle again at bedtime.
I think for his first day he has done amazing. I'm so proud of him! My main thing is how much milk he should have during the course of the day. I realize though that at first he probably won't drink as much because he isn't used to it yet.
Also, when you weaned, in what order did you drop the bottles? I'm thinking we'll drop his morning bottle before his bedtime one. I don't know.
Any input?
Re: weaning to milk
Yay! No advice for ya since I am not there yet. Curious to see answers since we will be there soon.
We were mostly to sippy cups before we started whole milk. I would switch to a cup on the bottle he is least interested in and take them out that way.
Our pedi told us 16-24 oz milk, however when we first switched she was only drinking milk and was up to about 30 oz/day. We try to give 20 oz milk and the rest water.
Jackson started refusing bottles around 11 months old, so I started offering milk in a sippy instead.
So basically, we never gave milk in a bottle, just in a sippy with meals/snacks/when requested by him and then before bed if he wanted some.
It was a pretty easy transition for him - partially because I think he was just ready [as evidenced by his bottle refusal]. Oh and I think the goal we had was between 12-24oz a day, but I could be wrong. We didn't worry too much about the actual numbers because ate/drank well and gained weight fine.
If he isn't attached to his bottles, and can handle a sippy well, I'd probably just do milk in sippys all the time. I would also drop the morning "bottle" and just give him breakfast w/ milk and still offer the nighttime "bottle" until he stops wanting it [but like I said, I would switch to a sippy]. When we were doing that, he'd sit on our laps, drink a little milk and get a story before bed.
When weaning M to whole milk, we did it through her bottles. We tried the sippy, but she wasn't taking enough and we worry about her getting enough calories. We'll worry about switching from bottle to sippy in the next month.
We didn't drop any bottles. We were giving one formula bottle a day for the last month and just started mixing the milk with the formula until it was all whole milk. Now we will give it to her in a bottle and a sippy cup. She likes it just as well as breastmilk or formula out of a bottle. Of course she still likes to nurse, but we are only doing that at night now too.
I hope that helps a little...
