Injects or IVF after falied IUIs?

I know I'm ahead of myself, but so I know for the future, if you produced mature follies on Clomid/Femara but IUIs still failed, did your RE recommend moving to injectibles or straight to IVF?  TIA!

  • Oh yeah, and why?

  • Yes. With an injectable IUI cycle the RE can see how your body is going to respond to the injections. If it doesn't work then it will at least make your IVF cycle go better.

Also, to me the jump between Clomid + IUI cycles and IVF is pretty big. It might help you to be able to get through an IVF cycle if you have already been through an injectable IUI cycle. (This one is just my opinion.) GL!

    Unexplained Infertility

After two Clomid cycles, three injectable IUI cycles, two IVFs, two miscarriages, and one lap surgery, IVF #2 has brought us our little boy!

  • Well I think it all depends on ur Dx, but since you are also unexplained like me here was my treatment plan:

I did 5 rounds of orals with TI. 2 rounds were on clomid which I produced many good follies on, but had many s/e's, therefore we switched to Femara for 3 rounds. On Femara, I only produced 1 good follie again with TI.

After 5 rounds of oral with TI, we decided to move onto injectibles with IUI. Since we're unexplained, the RE said they wanted to take progressive steps toward treatment and not go full on all at once since everything seems to be functioning fine. They also wanted to prevent any kind of OHSS that they could in addition to the risk of multiples.

They said they would try 6 rounds of injectibles with IUI before considering IVF (which DH & I conflict on moving forward with, so I'm really hoping that one of these IUI's stick).

Hope that helps and GL to you!

  • Our RE recommended IVF to start (MFI issues only)  but unfortunately we are 100% OOP for it and it's not an option financially. So... We are doing IUI and I do think he'll want us to move to injectibles if this 4th doesn't work...

  • Our diagnosis is unexplained. RE said that if 3-4 cycles of IUI with Clomid don't work then he would recommend moving straight to IVF. I'm curious to see if anyone else got this advice since most of the PPs said they did injectibles before moving on to IVF.

This is what our RE wants to do.  I think it might be because of the low morphology that my husband has being the only thing that we know of that could be causing an issue right now.

  • We are labeled as unexplained and RE gave us the choice of 3 b2b IUIs with either injectibles or clomid.  And then we will go to IVF.  I chose the injectibles but so far no luck.
  • We did 4 cycles of clomid +TI - all producing 2-3 follicles and all BFN's.  We then moved to 2 cycles of injectables + TI  - producing 4-6 follicles and again BFN's.  I thought we were going to move to injectables and IUI this cycle, but when I met with RE he said because of my great response every cycle and still BFN's he thought it'd be best for us to move to IVF --  We are also unexplained.

  • We've done 4 rounds of Clomid/IUI and I produced a mature follie 3 times and 3 mature follies once. I got a BFP with one follie followed by an m/c. My DH has no issues. If this IUI is a BFN, we are going to injectables with IUI because of the fact that I did manage to conceive - and so I I want to exhaust the steps progressively on the way to IVF.

Me: Stage II endo, borderline high FSH
    DH: perfect
    1 lap, 5 IUIs = 4 BFNs and 1 c/p
    2 IVFs, 2 FETs = 1 BFN, 1 c/p, 1 ectopic and finally a sticky BFP in May 2011!

  • We're also unexplained.  I had a lap in December, so we're going to try one more IUI and then move onto IVF.  For us, we figured that since everything has come up normal, there's either an issue with my eggs or eggs and sperm aren't meeting.  We considered doing injectables and IUI, but, one, it wouldn't solve the egg or egg and sperm issues, and two, the cost of 2-3 rounds of injectables equals one cycle of IVF.  We didn't want to "waste" money on the injectables and then not be able to afford IVF (like who can anyway?).  We figured IVF would definitely make the egg and sperm meet and if there were egg issues, we'd know sooner rather than later.
