Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Made our first non-scheduled pedi visit today.

DD developed an extremely bad rash on her hand yesterday so this morning I had to take her into the pedi during sick hours. Not an entirely bad thing since I haven't been able to schedule her an appt in over 5 months and she's not had a reason to go in during sick hours before. So at least we got her stats and every part of a well-child checkup other than a blood draw.

Anyway, yesterday I noticed the skin on two fingers of her hand was bubbled and blistered and that it was actually cracked open at the knuckles. I assumed she probably got it stepped on at the mall play area yesterday or maybe got it pinched in a shopping cart. She wasn't reacting to me touching it or bending her fingers and she didn't seem bothered by it, but it looked horrible.

It appears that it's contact dermatitis. Apparently something she touched yesterday caused her to react really badly. It's localized to just her fingers so thankfully we don't have to worry about it spreading. I assume one of the stores we were in yesterday used a cleaning product on a cart or a rack maybe that she touched. Either way, we now have a cream to put on there twice a day and hopefully it will clear up and no bacteria will get into the cuts. If it gets worse or doesn't change in about a week, I'll have to take her back to get an antibiotic cream. Sad

Other than just her fingers broken out, everything else looked great. Now she gets to walk around sporting a mitten on her sore hand for about 30 mins at a time while she's wearing the cream. She wasn't too sure about it at first, but now she thinks the mitten rocks. LOL! And she also did GREAT during our 4 HOUR wait at the pedi's office this morning. Yay!

  • Glad she's doing okay and that you found out what was wrong. Hopefully the cream will fix'er right up.

And, if I had to wait 4 hours at the Pedi, I'd find a new one. That is not acceptable to me.

During the sick hours it's first come first serve and there were over 20 people ahead of me. If you get a schduled appt, it's usually only takes about 2 hours (from sign in to leaving time). I'm glad he's so thorough. We were with him for almost 20 mins today. If he weren't so damn good we would've left but we searched high and low for a pedi like him in our area after the first one we had didn't work out. A scheduled appt is worth the wait but the walk-ins are a pain.

    that is ridiculous.

  • Holy crap, that's a crazy wait! If I wait more than 10 minutes, I threaten to leave. I've only had that kind of wait at the emergency room or off-hours walk-in clinics.

Yup. I agree.  It is crazy. He's really good. And it doesn't help that he's one of the only pedi's in the area unless you drive to the city (about 30+ mins away) so he's often overbooked. Tongue Tied
