Point & Shoot or DSLR?

I want to get a new camera with our tax refund money but really do not know where to start. I currently have a Sony Cyber Shot but the lag time on the shutter really sucks. I do love the clarity of the pictures, I believe it's a 12MP. So I'm wondering if I should invest in another P&S that may have a quicker shutter speed or just suck it up and invest in a DSLR. I am only looking to spend around $400 so I'm not sure what I can get for the price. TIA

  • Can you even get a DSLR for $400?

I say go for the DSLR (as I sit here seething with jealousy) but I think you'll have to spend a little more.

  • We have a Canon Rebel XS (DSLR) and I LOVE it!  I also had a Sony point & shoot and I hated the lag time.  There is absolutely no lag time with the DSLR.

If you shop around (best deals are probably online) you should be able to find a Canon XSi for $400-500..

  • I love my DSLR, but your price range isn't really going to get you into that market.  I'd do some research, find a P&S that meets your needs and go with it.  Even as much as I love my DSLR, it's big and bulky and not easy to take with you all the time.  A good P&S is fantastic to keep in your purse so you always have it with you to get a good shot.
  • DSLR!  We have the Nikon D60 and got it for around $450 (with the lens) during a sale on prestigecamera.com last year.  It takes amazing pictures!  If you're not sure you want a DSLR go with the nikon coolpix (P90 i think)... it has a big lens but not as big or as many features as the D60 and I think it goes for around $250 or $300.
  • I think it depends on what you want to use it for. If you have a point and shoot that works okay, then you can use it for toting around places, since a DSLR is big and bulky like someone else said. However, I got a Canon Rebel for Christmas and it has changed everything about the way I take pictures. I ADORE it. If you can find something similar in your price range, I highly recommend it. The pictures I have taken of DD since getting that camera are amazing compared to the ones before with my P&S. (And I have no skills. Its all the camera!)

  • DSLR

I don't care that it's bulky. I love the pictures it takes and it's awesome. I got a Canon Rebel xti .. I will probably never get a Point and Shoot again.

  • We have the Nikon D40 and LOVE it.  It cost about $550 I think.  You can also get a Canon (below), my mom and sister have it and love it as well.  DSLR quality with the P&S price!
