My pedi says it's because Eddie is a "big guy" (20 lbs 1.8 oz, 29 inches long) and has a hard time lifting himself up - but I've seen big babies sitting by themselves. Should I be worried? He can barely stay up in tripod position for more than a few minutes.
What are some suggestions to get him to sit up independently? TIA!
Re: Not sitting up by himself yet at 6 months
Mine does the same thing. He is alittle pudgeball too. I wouldn't worry. I'm not. My oldest one sat up, crawled and walked late and he is now a year an a half ahead on everything. Enjoy your baby while they are a baby, they grow up too fast.
I wouldn't worry too much. DD wasn't sitting by herself until closer to 7-7.5 months. This had a lot to do with the fact that most of the time when she tried to sit up she would throw up, and when that subsided she did much better.
I usually sat right behind her and put some toys in front of her. That way she was supported, but using some of her own muscles to sit up. You might also try a boppy if you have one. I continually put her in there until she could sit very well because she would often throw herself back and hit her head on the floor. Just keep practicing, he'll get there. HTH
thanks! that was one of the reasons why we took away the bumbo for a while - he would puke every time he got into sitting position. we're trying the bumbo again - he's a little better in it now. shall try the boppy suggestion too.
thanks so much ladies for the advice!
DS can sit up, but can't do it well for long periods of time. And I certainly can't put him in a sitting position and walk away. I need to sit with him and be ready to "catch" him.
Pedi said at 9 mo they will check to see if he can sit unassisted for 5 seconds. That's the one big milestone they want to see at that point.
DS only started sitting unassisted in the last couple of days. He was crawling before sitting. He is a big boy, but I thought maybe it had something to do with his being breech since his legs would always be straight out in front of him so there wasn't much support there.
Until even a couple weeks ago he was tipping over even with the support of the Boppy. We did all the usual things to help him, sitting him up to play, propping with the Boppy, sitting with him in front of me to help support him. I don't think you need to be worried. I was getting worried too, but I guess just like everything else they'll do it in their own time.
my DS is almost 6 months old, and he can't sit unassisted for more than a minute - usually not even that long. i put him in the sitting position for a few hours a day - in my lap, in the boppy, in the bumbo - and he sits up really well assisted, but he will throw himself back if he's sitting unassisted and i have to be ready to catch him.
he's doing his milestones in a really weird order though, b/c yesterday he stood up with no help from me, and held onto the coffee table for 5 minutes without falling. of course, i was right there to catch him if he fell, but he didn't.
i'm not too worried, but it is frustrating seeing all these babies who are younger than him on here doing it!
