Sudafed while PG?

My cold is getting worse, not better and I can hardly breathe, which means I'm not sleeping at all and I need sleep to a) get better and b) get through a full day with a toddler while DH is OOT. My dr. said regular Sudafed was fine, but the pharmacy tech gave me a hard time about it and when I looked it up online it said to avoid while PG, but the only meds I find recommended for cough and cold are to relieve cough symptoms and while I have a cough, the congestion is my major symptom. Benedryl is another option, but it makes me too drowsy to take during the day. So, long-winded explanation, but question is:

What meds did your dr. okay for nasal congestion during pregnancy? Did he/she say Sudafed was ok during pregnancy?

Re: Sudafed while PG?

  • Yup, OB said Sudafed was okay. I had a very hard time believing it and called twice to confirm.

  • There is nothing worse than not being able to breathe while PG!  I honestly don't remember if my doc okayed Sudafed because I was too paranoid to take anything, but here is a non-medicinal alternative... it's kind of gross, but I swear it works better than anything I have ever taken.  Do you have a back massager?  If so, use it to massage your face above the cheekbone where your sinuses are and on the side of your nose.  My sister taught me this trick and I would do it while watching tv.  It takes a while--like at least a half hour, but the vibration completely loosens all of that congestion and snot.  It comes POURING  out! (Told you it was gross--but you'll feel so much better).

  • Sudafed is a Class C drug, so while my OB said it was "probably ok," I was not comfortable taking it.

Have you tried steam? Heat some water until it is steaming then sit with a towel over your head while you breath the steam in, or turn the shower on and steam up your bathroom. Also try a wearm/hot compress over the sinus areas that are most stuffed up.

Yeah, I've been trying "natural" remedies since Sat. and I'm still getting worse. Steam helps only while I'm in it, then 5 min. later I'm back to where I was before...

hmmm....we used to have a back massager somewhere, maybe I'll have to dig that out and give it a try.

  • i was ok'd to take Sudafed (just the plain/regular one) while PG.  It is pretty safe from my understanding.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • I bought a netty pot while PG and BFing.  Kinda strange at first but best invention ever.  It worked well to help clear my congestion.  I think Whole Foods has them.

  • I had an awful cold and ended up taking Sudafed (the one behind the counter) when I really needed it. Like you, I wasn't able to sleep or rest and I was out of work for 2 weeks, but the cold lingered for about 4 weeks total. The pharm tech also gave me a hard time (since it was Class C -- which I *think* means that there hasn't been as much testing on pg women), but I bought it anyway and just called my doc again. They okayed it since I was out of the first tri and I really needed relief. Benadryl makes me drowsy, too. My normal doc also said she took it when she was pg.
  • My doc okayed it with my last pregnancy, actually she recommended it for my headaches. I can't take those kinds of meds even not pg (make me really loopy and my heart race so I don't take them).

I had a horrible, awful cold within two days of finding out I was pregnant this time. It was miserable!! I was going to recommend a neti pot as well, kind of icky but I know plenty of people who use them all the time (not PG) because they prefer a more holistic approach and everyone says it works well.

  • Tylenol cold or sudafed was okayed by my doc, but on the form of stuff to stay away from that they give everyone was any antihistamine (Benedryl)... Perhaps the newer sudafed that is sold over the counter and not behind the pharmacy desk is not class C.  The active ingredient in the newer version is what is used in tylenol cold...
