Babies: 0 - 3 Months

if you have a dog...

How have you convinced your dog that baby toys are not just really good dog toys you're keeping from him?

I'm 29 weeks along and starting to get more baby toys -- they all seem to be squeaky or furry and the dog thinks they are for her.  At the moment it's not hard to keep everything put away because my kid's not here yet, but I wondered how others of you have handled the baby toy/dog toy thing.  Do they eventually learn?  Do you just have to keep everything off the floor or locked away at all times?

Re: if you have a dog...

  • We just had to tell them 'no' over and over and there were very severe consequences if they played with baby toys.  When we would take away baby toys, we would always give them their own toys.  They seem to have learned the difference now.

  • We dont give our dog the fuzzy squeaky stuffed toys anymore, havent for almost a year...he destroys them in like an hour. So he pretty much knows that baby toys arent his...

  • I was so worried about this, bc our dog loves to "kill" stuffies. But a firm No or Leave It seems to be working. I think we underestimated his intelligence on this one.
  • My dog is really good about not playing with stuff unless we give it to him.  I have no idea how this happened so I'm not really much help!  I'm more worried about DS getting the dog toys at this point!  Once he gets more mobile I think that will be our problem!  However the dog is obsessed with burp cloths and anything that DS spits up on (and he spits up a lot).  I have to constantly put the laundry into a closed room and I think I say "leave it" 1,000 times a day!

  • We tell her no and she's pretty good about leaving them alone. Though I wouldn't trust her if I wasn't around.

I'm resigned to the fact that at some point, dog and baby will be sharing toys.

This is what we have done as well.

This!  Even my stubborn, bull-headed Beagle/Dalmatian figured this one out.  We had one unfortunate incident with a musical stuffed giraffe from Target, but some emergency abdominal surgery managed to save the little bugger.  Other than that, he's been great.

  • I strongly recommend teaching the "Leave It" command.  It's pretty easy to teach and we only have to tell our dog once or twice for each baby toy he wants before he learns that one isn't his.

  • Thanks for the advice...I guess I just have to be patient and keep telling her no and hope eventually she learns. Our girl knows "leave it" but then she'll try again after a minute or two, like we're going to have changed our minds.
  • Whenever you bring something new into the house for baby, let puppy check it out before you give her sh*t. My dog is doing very well with not playing with baby toys, and I think it's partially because we let him check eveything out. So he's not curious as to what anything is, and since he knows what it is and that he's not allowed to play with it, he doesn't bother.
  • My basset thinks every single thing in the house is hers.  Including our lazy boy chairs.  She is stubborn.  She is also obsessed with the baby and protects him to the point that she has been peed on during diaper changes and just today he spit up on her.
