Parents who Ferber-QUESTION

We've been doing a modified Ferber.  He doesn't have any trouble going to sleep-Bath, Bottle, Bed--he's out, so we just do 5-10-15 min CIO sessions when he wakes up at night.  It has worked GREAT for us, and we hardly ever had to do anything any more.... until the past month or so.  LO is rolling over in his sleep and wakes up on his tummy and starts to fuss.  I have been going in (sometimes as many times as 4 in one hour--15 times in one night was the worst) when I hear him on the monitor begin the initial fussing and rolling him back over.  For the most part he just falls back asleep when rolled over--but like I mentioned some nights I am having to roll him over countless times.  I am thinking that I may be doing him a dis-service by rolling him over and that I should stop going in automatically to roll him over.  Perhaps I should give him 5-10 min to fuss and see if he rolls himself back over?  Thoughts, Ideas, Experience?

TIA

Re: Parents who Ferber-QUESTION

  • I would just let him fuss for a minute and forget about the rolling.  My LO sleeps in a little ball on her stomach at the end of her crib.  We ferberized and she sometimes wakes up makes a little fuss and goes back to bed within 5 min.  Its ok if he sleeps on his stomach now.. is that something you are worried about?

  • we went through the same thing.  we would let hiim fuss a little then roll him.  he still rolls better going back to belly than he does belly to back....but the issue worked itself out after a few long weeks!  lucky for us, it was more of an issue at naptime than at night.
  • Not worried at all about the stomach sleeping.  I've been rolling him back over because he gets upset being on his stomach and I was trying to avoid the 30 or so total min of crying that Ferber sometimes entail. I realize now that I am staying awake much longer than 30 min by constantly going back in to roll him over, rather than just letting him fuss.
  • Ohh maybe a night or two of fussing will solve the problem and he wont roll over or he will adjust to stomach sleeping??? Good luck

  • Give him a lot of back and tummy time during the day and roll him from his back to his tummy and make sure he can do it really easily.  Hopefully (for you) soon he'll do it if he wants back on his back at night.
  • Do you live with us?? 'cause it sounds like our household a few weeks ago. We just ended up having to let him fuss on his stomach. We were also doing modified ferber -- standing over him, caressing his face, ssshhhing him back to sleep. We stopped rolling him over and instead patted and rubbed his back while he was on his tummy. After a night or two, he started to fuss less, so we started leaving him for longer and longer (never had to leave him more than 10 minutes). Now, he doesn't even wake up when he rolls and we find him on his tummy every. single. morning.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks so much to everyone... here goes what could be a rough night.  fingers Crossed it just takes a few nights and he adjusts to either sleeping on his tummy or starts to roll back over on his own.  Mommy needs some sleep if she is going to be a good mommy.
