S/O When did LO start using utensils?

I saw a FB video of a friend's toddler (basically same age as DC) using a spoon like a pro.

Andrew is not a pro.  He has interest in using the spoon but he's not very efficient.  When I give him a spoon, he mostly plays with it and ignores the food.

He's doing a little better with both a spoon and fork (I have to spear things for him.)  But he mostly eats everything with his fingers whether it's a finger food or not.

He's got the independence thing down.  Sometimes he completely refuses to allow me to spoon feed him.  If I can spoon feed him, then he must have a spoon to play with too.  So messy!  LOL And he won't let me guide his hand while holding the spoon.

Any tips?  I guess I just have to let him at it?

Re: S/O When did LO start using utensils?

  • My lo is the same way! But when I give a spoon, it usually goes flying with food on it! I've just been giving him the spoon at each meal, reminding him how to use it, and then seeing what he does. He still eats some pureed foods so sometimes, he will eat it with the spoon but then I dont know what happens..he gets bored with or what but then it goes on the floor. lol! so id definitely be interested in seeing what others post on the subject. I suppose he'll get it when he's ready and just to keep letting him use it.

  • I've been giving them to Riley for about 8 months now. Ever since she turned one, she's been given and fork and spoon. She is the type that wants to do everything on her own and wantsto feel grown up. She'd prefer to use her own fork and eat grown up food off of my plate-lol! She loves using her utensils but at times, she still goes all natural with her fingers. It's the fastest way to get food in the mouth!

  • I also started giving it to her around a year, but it wasn;t til about 18 months that she was really good at using them.
  • I havne't given Abby any spoons, unless it's with mashed potatoes or something sticky like that, but she's pretty good with forks.  She's trying to spear the food with the fork, but the plastic ones don't pierce well, so I bought her some metal gerber forks.  They seem to be doing the trick.  I still have to help get some of the food onto the fork, but last week we at least moved past her pulling the food OFF the fork and eating it with herh ands LOL

If we're sppon feeding her (like apple sauce or yogurt) she lets us just feed her.  I don't knwo why, maybe b/c it's sweet?  But when I give her breakfast, like oatmeal, she needs her own spoon.  I also have to put down some finger foods while I'm spoon feeding her; she eats a piece of cracker, i give her some oatmeal, and so on.

  • Nicky is two and a half and has only recently begun using a fork about 50% of the time.  He prefers his hands, even though he has known what to do with a spoon or fork since he was a little over one. I put one or the other on his plate at every meal, but he hardly uses them.
  • I think around 1 I started giving them to her regularly.  She got the hang of a fork quicker than a spoon, maybe 15 months?  Then a spoon around 18.  She still eats with her fingers sometimes, but mostly will use the fork.  She eats all spoon-able foods herself, oatmeal, applesauce, yogurt, etc.  She was messy at first but she got the hang of it and now gets (most) of it in her mouth!

  • I actually started giving LO a spoon/fork around 10 months and he definitely understood the concept but it was VERY messy. He usually just lets me feed him because it's faster, and he wants his food. I don't give him utensils too often yet, though, because I usually don't feel like cleaning BOTH of us up after he flings food in MY hair ;)

  • She's pretty good with a fork but I barely trust her with a spoon.  It's a mess!  I only give her the spoon if I'm supervising and if I can assist to show her the way.  It's not easy.

  • Cedric started using a spoon and fork at around 10 months.  But Graciela, at 11 months, has no clue how to use them.
  • I guess it will get better, right?  Maybe one day I won't have to sweep and mop the floor after every meal.  :)
