Pennsylvania Babies

New to board-Moving to Lancaster!

Hi fellow PA Bumpies! I've never come on to my local board before so I wanted to introduce myself and see if any fellow Lancaster bumpies have some recs for me.

I'm Jess. Just had my first baby (Hailey) born on 10/19/09. DH and I will be moving down to Lancaster from the Poconos within the next few weeks. I'm a RN  and work part time (per diem).

We are starting the house hunting process this weekend and just wondering about some areas we will be looking in. I need to live as far north in Lancaster county as possible (I will be commuting to work in Allentown). We will be looking in Denver, ephrata, and adamstown. Are these good areas? We have no idea what to expect moving down there.

Any info you can offer would be a great help to us!

TIA!

  • Hi and welcome to the board,  I'm not from Lancaster, but I do like going shopping at the outlets there....I'm not much help.   Good luck on the move!

  • Congrats on your exciting changes! I'm from the Western part of the county.  Most of the area you're looking at is pretty rural - though I imagine you'd want to stay near main roads in the winter if you've got a long drive....pretty close to 222 for an easy connection. It's a really beautiful area of the county!  You'll be looking at Cocalico and Ephrata SD's I presume.  Hopefully there is someone who lives more in this area who can help you out...even someone who's on the near side of Berks Co. might know it better, since it's so close...
  • When we were originally looking for homes we looked in the Ephrata (and surrounding areas).  Cocalico is a good school district, I'm not sure about Ephrata SD.  Living in that area you are so close to 222 and the turnpike, you can jump on and head anywhere!  Let me know if you have any questions.  Good luck!

  • If you are able to deal with the snow in Saylorsburg you will be fine with the roads that are a little more rural. Most anything up that way I think is a nice town. The  closer you get to lancaster city the less I think you would like it.
  • Thanks everyone. Yes, almost all the houses we looked at are in the cocalico school district.

  • We just moved to Lancaster in July so I'm still a bit too new to really give advice.  I have visited Ephrata though and it seems like a nice town.  Main street is really cute!

We are renting now while we get to know the area but are planning to eventually buy in the Lampeter Strasburg school district.  It's supposed to be a very good school system .. ranked 25 in the state of over 500.  I think West Lampeter, Strasburg, and Willow Street attend.  Our top choice is Strasburg.  Right now we live in the Conestoga Valley school district which is ok but not where we want to stay forever.  We are in East Lampeter Twp  right now.

The area you are looking is a bit more rural I think.  I know I sent FIL a listing for a dome house in Denver that was on like 5 acres in the woods.  Seems like a nice area and like the others said it's near 222 which puts you pretty central to everything.
