Would you expose your LO to chicken pox?

Maybe I'm a little lost here.  My friend has 3 boys, and all of them have the chicken pox.  Her first one had it about 2 weeks ago, and the other 2 boys finally came down with it this weekend.  We were supposed to go to their house for a bday party, but didn't because of the chicken pox.  But a lot of my friends are asking why we didn't come and just expose the girls, so they catch it and then don't get it when they are older.  I'm just really confused because I can't imagine purposefully taking my children to a place where there's something like that, and intentionally exposing them and hoping they catch it.  Maybe I'm the crazy one because I'm the only one that seems to be bothered by it.  So I was just curious what you mommies think?  Maybe I'm hoping you will tell me I'm not crazy:-) TIA

  • You are not crazy.  I would not have gone to that party.

  • That sounds way old school. Isn't there a vaccine now?
  • I wouldn't have gone.  DS will get the vaccine when he's old enough too.

  • People who do that are nuts, IMO.
  • I should clarify, that my friend who has the boys with it doesn't vaccinate...and some of the other moms there don't either.  I feel like I was doing what was best to protect my children, especially since our youngest DD hasn't had the vaccine yet.  I don't feel like I'm crazy, just feel like they are making me feel crazy...if that makes any sense:-)
  • This is very old school...my mom did this to me, and my 2 siblings back in the 80s-early 90s before the vaccine so that we'd get it before we got older. We never did, so when they got the vaccine we all 3 got it. My dh had it as a child, and now he doesn't want Caden to get it the vaccine. I'm worried that the vaccine might not be as effective since I've had it for 10-15 years, and if Caden gave it to me--I might get it now as an adult. No bueno.

  • Just because you are exposed or even have had it, doesn't mean you are immune. I'm an example. And getting the vaccine doesn't mean you'll never get it as shown by the pox outbreak at my school last year. All of the sick kids had been vaccinated. That said, I'd rather my kid get it naturally.

  • I have heard that getting it as an adult is really dangerous but I wouldn't have gone either just to "get it out of the way." Heck no!!! With modern advances in medicine and technology this should be a virus we should never have to deal with anymore. Hopefully by the time the kids are adults chicken pox will no longer be a common childhood virus. I think it's ridiculous that people expose their kids like that.

  • I dont think I really want to give the vaccine.  But I still don't think I'd have gone to the party either.
  • I've heard of doing that and I think parents who have disease parties are crazy.  Sorry, I'm not even going to soften that by "IMHO."

  • Honestly, maybe, before the vaccine.

But now that there's a vaccine, no way.

  • I wouldn't intentionally subject B to that, but I would rather he get it naturally than get a vaccine that isn't a guarantee. However, I have an immunity to it despite never having it nor getting a vaccine, so I'm hoping my natural awesomeness (haha) was passed on to B.

  • I think I would, yes. It's so much better for them to get it for real than to get the vaccine. The vaccine doesn't even work 100% of the time, but if you get it for real, you're covered for life. Also, it is usually WAY less horrible when you're young than when you're older--think 6 pox verses 100.
