Saying "Hey" instead of "Hi", considered rude?

I notice that I say "Hey" a lot in place of "Hi".  I do this quite a bit in my professional life also.  Like just now, I was walking by a physician I work with and said "Hey, Dr. Blah-Blah" instead of hi. 

Do people take offense to that or think it is rude?  If so, I need to make a more conscious effort to say hi instead.

    I don't.. but I live in california ;) Sometimes we just say 'What's up?' ;)

    My 8th grade English teacher would say that it's rude.  Me...I don't care!

    Not in the south!  That's how we greet people in person, on the phone, in texts, emails.....

    I don't think it's rude.  I do think it sounds informal, however.  So, given the subject of the "hey", I suppose it may be considered rude.

    I only think hey is rude when used to get someones attention.  Like - hey - your chair is on my coat, or hey - what time is it?

    I don't think it's rude, I do it all the time.  My office is pretty lax so maybe I wouldn't if I was in a more serious office.

    I don't know if it's rude or not, but when I was little and said "hey" to my mom, she would jokingly say that "hay's for horses." ?I would then change and say hello or hi.

    i agree with this.  i have a much bigger problem with "yeah" instead of "yes".  oh and using "uh-huh" - i'm sorry i don't respond to grunts.
