Babies: 3 - 6 Months

6 hour car ride with LO?

I'm planning to go to my BF's baby shower mid-March.  It's a 6 hour drive and I'll be making it alone with DD.  Do you think it would be best to leave early in the morning so we have a whole day to take our time getting there, or leave close to DD's bedtime and hope she sleeps.  I'm worried that if we leave late, we won't be getting there until about midnight and if we have a rough trip, I'll have to stop super late at night with a baby and possibly get a hotel room.

Have any of you taken long road trips by yourself with LO?  Thanks for any tips!

TIA!

  • Does your LO sleep a lot in the morning? If so, try going really early in the day. That way, hopefully she'll sleep most of the trip, and then you can stop as needed when she's more awake - maybe find a park en route (bring your stroller) if she decides to wake up and have a bit of wakeful time, so you can feed and play with her for a bit before she settles for another nap. Farthest I've gone with DD so far is 2 hours up north.. but I had my mom and hubby with me, and she wanted to be fed halfway home (so did I!!), so mom had to feed her (she was in the back seat with DD). If they hadn't been with me, then I would've had to pull over and feed her, but I would definitely recommend a time when you know she's going to sleep a lot. Also, make sure you have mirrors so you can see her and tell when she's really fussing, or just babbling, but make sure they don't interfere with your driving mirrors.

  • Nevermind...I noticed your LO is a few months older than mine so probly not very relivent advice.  lol
  • We just did a 6 hour drive this past weekend and it was difficult.  DH drove and I sat in the back with DD.  She cried probably 1.5 hours total and slept some.  This was the second time we've made this trip, and I don't know if I will attempt it again until she is older.
