Not including our unfinished basement (where we keep all our crap) we have 1715sf. We have 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms. Sometimes I think its too small but its really a good size - I just need to use the space more wisely!
Like holy crap. I would not know what to do with that much space! The one we are looking at is 910sqft
We have a lot of space thats for sure, we bought an old farm house and it actually burnt to the ground about 3 years ago, so we ended up rebuilding the exact same house but modern..we don't plan on ever leaving...so we still have room to grow if needed
The house we're renting is about 1100. We are currently looking to buy as well and I wouldn't want to go any smaller. Ideally I'd like around 2500, but for the area we're looking at, and the price range we can afford we're most likely going to end up with 1500 if we're lucky.

750sq ft. It sucks and I can't wait to get into a place with at least 2 bedrooms. Chances of us being able to sell this condo are slim though.
I hear ya. That is why we are moving, we are in a one bedroom apartment right now. I can't wait to have more room, but even at 910 sqft it is about 200 sqft more that we have right now. I have no idea where I'm gonna put all our stuff.
3400 sq ft and i dont even go in 40% of it. but i think it will be great when the boys are bigger. we moved in a week before they were born with that in mind.
910 would seem like a palace. It's not too bad yet since O is not mobile but I'm dreading her crawling if we still live here.
It really sucks that we bought responsibly. Our mortgage is more than affordable even with association fees, but now the value is so damn low we will have to pay thousands to avoid a short sale.
I'm confused as to how knowing what the square footage of other people's houses in random parts of the States would help you in your house search? The price per square foot is DRASTICALLY different in one part of the States than it is in the other.

I feel that she wasn't looking at price/sqft as much as what other people with families feel they need. I think it's a legit thing to be asking when looking at houses, especially if it is their first house.
We currently rent a townhouse that is 1400sqft and we feel that it is slightly too small for us. There is very little storage and we have to tell people not to get the kids large presents because we have nowhere to put them.
The 2 houses we have owned in the past have been 1800 and 2400. The larger one was the perfect size for us.
In the end a lot of it has to do with proportions and layout. The 1800sqft house would have been better if the living are was smaller and the bedrooms were larger. The 2400sqft house was laid out so that all the rooms were exactly what we needed.

Ah...that makes more sense. Sorry, OP...I'm having a stoopid night
The house we're closing on next week is 4/2 and 1,855. We've lived in 750sqft, 950sqft, and 1,100sqft. I've done ok with the last place but if we want another baby we have to have more space.
Our house is 2300 and right now it is a good size for us. We are a 3/2 w/ an office. However, I feel like with a 2nd child we would need something bigger. DH and I have different views on this though. His two sisters shared a room growing up while I was an only child in a 4 bedroom house. So he thinks we could have an second kid and live in this house.
I just like the idea of a dedicated guest room that isn't filled with toys and decorated to the tastes of a kid. I know our family and friends probably wouldn't mind, but I guess growing up in a house that was this way it is what makes the most sense to me.

Our house is around 1100 sq ft. 3 bedrroms, 1 1/2 baths. I wish it was a little bigger. We have a huge fenced in backyard so I guess that kind of makes up for it!

We bought a 3 bedroom/1.5 bath last spring and it's 1700sqft. It's just the right size for us. We're only planning on having 2 kids, and it has a great yard and lots of living space so we really like it.
We're in the process of buying our first house. It's a 1650 sq ft town house without the basement. We are going tomorrow to meet with the builder to make plans for finishing the basement so I'm not sure how much footage that adds to it. It's a good size for now, but won't be the house we stay in for the rest of our lives. When we build some equity and DH nearly doubles his pay in the next 3 yrs we will maybe look again at that point. For now all we care about is getting the hell out of my in laws house.

We have about 2300 and 3/2 as well. Upstairs is a little more than 1500 and our basement is about 800, all one open room. Our garage is about 1/2 the "basement." I still feel like we need more room and would really love to have a dedicated guest room also. We are using our 3rd BR upstairs right now for an office, but if we have another LO we will move that to the basement and also use that as a play area for toys and stuff. I would be perfectly satisfied with our house if it had one more BR and a little more closet space.

My baby is two!!! Baby girl 9/17/09
My other baby is still a baby! Baby Boy 11-30-11
Uggh. This. We have a 800sq ft 1 bedroom condo, that we're stuck with for now. I'm dreading the crawling stage too.
We have 1300 finished. 1700 total. It is 3 bedrooms, 3 bath. The spare bedrooms are tiny!
We will be putting our house on the market in the next couple weeks. We will be taking a loss, but it's worth it. We're looking for around 3000 sq ft
