Tell me about your breech baby... experience...

So, I was freaking out earlier today. I have thought for a while that our LO was breech, but the doctor kept telling me he was head down. So today I had the doctor feel what I thought was the head in my side. Well.... U/S confirmed he is breech. We are 36 weeks today. I am scared and wondering where to go from here. They brought up c-section and something I think they called inversion.... What was your experience? Did you do the turning procedure? What was it like? Did it work (he said it only works about 50% or the time for 1st time moms)? Did you have a c-section in the end or did they flip on their own? And do you have any advice......

Re: Tell me about your breech baby... experience...

  • DD was breech but I didnt find out until 39 weeks and I had a c-section. I hated my c-section experience but what matters is that LO was safe. People recommended spinningbabies.com and I heard going to a chiropractor is very successful. The aversion scared me and I wouldnt try it (I was not offered it but did some research). Good Luck and remember whatever it takes to get LO here safe is whats most important.

  • External cephalic version... try it, there is a something like a 50/50 chance it works. Ultrasound confirmed that my LO was breech two days before her due date. The next day we tried the ec version. She wasn't budging. It worked like this: the doc scheduled me a time to be at the hospital. I showed up the next morning and a nurse set me up with an IV and gave me the muscle relaxer to relax the uterus. They monitor the baby before and after to make sure the ec version hasn't stressed the baby. My baby was fine the whole time. It sure wasn't comfortable, but with some concentrated breathing I made it through.

It didn't work. :-( but it was worth a shot.

Well, as you can see based my badge, I had my daughter via c-section. I was most fearful of a c-section recovery. The surgery went great, I love love love my doctor, she did a great job. The recovery went well, but it was hard.

You are early enough, your LO may be small enough to turn.

  • My LO was in an unstable breech position; at 36 weeks I found out that he was transverse, fully breech at 37, head down at 38 and breech again at 38 1/2 weeks. My OB won't due versions due to the risks, but with unstable babies they'll just flip back to wherever they want to be, so it doesn't make sense to try and turn them.

I was prepared for a c-section, although I wasn't thrilled about it after having two uncomplicated vaginal deliveries. When I was induced at 39w3d he had flipped head down again. I was lucky; my OB mentioned that unstable breech only occurs in about 6% of pregnancies and that they usually end in a c-section. I delivered vaginally; LO did have his head tilted to the side, like he was trying to turn again, but my OB was able to straighten it out.

My best advice is to prepare for a c-section, but keep in mind that you may deliver vaginally. IF you do get scheduled for a c-section, don't be afraid to ask for an u/s that day. When I went in to be induced the nurses were all set to get things rolling for my c-section. I asked for an u/s to make sure that he was still breech, and sure enough - he was head down. A 20 section u/s saved me from recovering from major surgery.  Good luck to you!

  • I went into labor at 36 weeks 4 days and had to have a c/s. Baby was breech but they wouldn't try an external version because my water had broken so there was nothing to help turn her.

Frankly, I'm kind of happy I had a c/s. I had a pretty easy recovery though.

  • This is pretty much exactly what happened to me. Inversion wasn't an option because LO was a big baby and my amniotic fluid was measuring a little low. The whole inversion thing freaked me out a little anyway, because apparently it can put you into early labor. I tried all kinds of stuff to get LO to turn but no luck. I was initially devastated about having a c-sec but it turned out GREAT. I was able to nurse immediately afterward, and DS stayed with me for at least 45 min after the surgery. All of the grandparents came to see him in the recovery room with me, so I was able to be there when everyone saw him for the first time (this was a big deal to me).

After talking with my OB, she seems to think that I wouldn't have been able to deliver him vaginally anyway, given his size (almost 9 lbs), so it may have ended in an emergency c-section even if he hadn't been breech.

Anyway, I know it sucks because you've been picturing the whole birth process and it probably didn't involve surgery... but the important thing is that you'll end up with a healthy baby.

  • my dr kept telling me that my baby was head down too!! I just knew she wasn't, so I got my friend at work to u/s me and sure enough, she was still breech at 38 weeks!! I called my dr and she said to go to her office the next day for an u/s and they found that I had no amniotic fluid, so they rushed me into surgery and I came out with a healthy baby girl! I've had a great recovery and wouldn't have changed anything!! just do what's best for your child and everything will be okay!! good luck!!
  • My baby was breech and I chose not to do the version. I did try the webster technique with a chiropractor. It's worth a shot since it isn't risky at all. It ended up not working. My water broke at 37 weeks and I had a c-section.
