Pregnant after a Loss

Fifth disease?

We got a scary phone call from a parent at the gym yesterday that she thinks both her twin girls who come to classes at our gym have fifth disease.  She wanted to inform us because she knows that it's especially dangerous for pregnant women and she knows that I'm pregnant.  The girls were symptom free last week when they came to class (that of course I taught) but apparently with this disease, you are most contagious before symptoms present.  I've googled it a little bit and what I've found says that it is most dangerous in the first trimester, but I don't know a whole lot about it.  Anyone else know about it at all?  I have an OB appointment tomorrow morning, so I'll tell them I was possibly exposed and I think they will want to do some blood work.  But I figured I'd ask.

Re: Fifth disease?

  • I don't know anything about it but I just wanted to say I hope you didn't catch it and if they have to do bloodwork, I hope everything comes back normal!!!

  • The school I teach out just had a recent outbreak too. I read up on it and it does appear that the most dangerous time is the first trimester. I think the dangers are similar to that of chicken pox in pregnancy. I would def check in with your OB, they will have more definitive answers.

I hope all is well and that the germs stay away! :)

  • Please, please call your doctor first thing tomorrow. I have only known one woman who was exposed to fifth's while pregnant (my cousin) and it ended really badly. I believe she was past the first trimester. (I'm not trying to be alarmist, just take care of yourself!)

Don't worry - my appointment is at 9am, so I will be taking care of it very early tomorrow.

Also - to clarify - this mother doesn't have confirmation that her daughters actually have the disease - they are still waiting on tests, but I'm being careful just in case.

  • They tested me during the first appt. blood work I got done.  I am a teacher (sahm now) and one of the kids had Fifth's Disease and when I called my doctor they told me I was immune.  Hopefully they already ran the test with prior blood work and you are immune.
  • A child in my class was just diagnosed with Fifth's disease. I was freaking out a little until I talked to my doctor. She said that most adults are already immune and that I shouldn't worry unless I actually develop symptoms. A mom at my school who's a pediatrician also said that the risk is greatest during the 1st trimester.

  • When I was pregnant with Nicholas there was a breakout in my school (mostly in my grade, of course) of Fifths Disease. I mentioned it to my doctor and she basically said not to worry a whole lot as most adults are immune to it. She did say that if I wanted I could have the bloodwork to check, but at that point it was useless because if I had it there was nothing to do. Just be sure to wash your hands regularly and take all of the steps you would not to get sick. I mean still definitely go in, but most likely it's nothing to worry about.
