We got a scary phone call from a parent at the gym yesterday that she thinks both her twin girls who come to classes at our gym have fifth disease. She wanted to inform us because she knows that it's especially dangerous for pregnant women and she knows that I'm pregnant. The girls were symptom free last week when they came to class (that of course I taught) but apparently with this disease, you are most contagious before symptoms present. I've googled it a little bit and what I've found says that it is most dangerous in the first trimester, but I don't know a whole lot about it. Anyone else know about it at all? I have an OB appointment tomorrow morning, so I'll tell them I was possibly exposed and I think they will want to do some blood work. But I figured I'd ask.
Re: Fifth disease?
The school I teach out just had a recent outbreak too. I read up on it and it does appear that the most dangerous time is the first trimester. I think the dangers are similar to that of chicken pox in pregnancy. I would def check in with your OB, they will have more definitive answers.
I hope all is well and that the germs stay away!
Don't worry - my appointment is at 9am, so I will be taking care of it very early tomorrow.
Also - to clarify - this mother doesn't have confirmation that her daughters actually have the disease - they are still waiting on tests, but I'm being careful just in case.
