Babies: 3 - 6 Months

am I the only one delaying solids?

Till 9 months. I honestly see all these posts and think "recommended age to start is 6 months! and yet people start at like 4 months" Our pedi recommended delaying till 9 months. So that is what we are going to do, I wanted to delay solids anyway, cause I don't want to drop nursing sessions.

This is in no way a flame for those that give solids. I was just wondering if anyone else is waiting and delaying?

Re: am I the only one delaying solids?

  • I will wait until 6 months. I was told if you start later than 8 months or so, there will be a bigger chance of them refusing solids.

My friend started at 8 months, it's obvious her son isn't ready for it, he pushes it out adn it gets all over his face.

  • What is the reason for delaying to 9months? I know 6 is the general reccomendation these days. Just curious as to why your pedi likes the 9month mark.

  • DS 1, I started cereal at 7 months. To each his own!

This.  I'm also curious.  I've never heard 9 months till this post.

  • recommended is 4-6 months.  A new study came out that found that starting at 4 months does not increase the likelihood of allergies.  There are advantages to waiting and disadvantages.  I have read that if you wait too long (like 9 months) your child may reject solid food and be a picky eater.  Of course, no adult lives on BM or formula, so eventually all babies learn to eat. To each his own.

  • We're starting at 6 months.  From what I understand, you shouldn't drop any nursing sessions until they are a year old no matter if they eat solids or not.

  • you should actually read this study:  Introducing gluten before 3 months and after 7 months has been shown to increase the chances of Celiac Disease and the best time to intruduce solids is between 17 and 26 weeks, not sooner or later.

Of course this is just one study, so who knows what is right.

Its just what she recommends as far as avoiding food allergies, and she doesn't believe solids are necessary until they are older. our friends pedi had the same recommendation. So 2 separate pedi's advice.

Its really to each their own.

    This. I heard that too.

  • We were waiting until 6 months (andskipping cereal), but decided to try 2 weeks early b/c DS is waking up so much at night due to his severe reflux.  So we tried cereal last night and it did help him.

I, too, am shocked at the amount of people starting at 3 and 4 months.  I don't get that at all. If it weren't for reflux, I'd be delaying til 9 -12 months. We are skipping purees and doing BLW though (besides cereal which we're going to stick with, I hadn't planned that!)

  • We're starting at six months, as long as she's showing an interest in food and enjoys it.

This is what we'll do too.

  • I waited till 9 mos with Harmon and I was ADAMANT about it b/c of everything I had read.  Now he is the WORLDS PICKIEST EATER.  I dunno if it has anything to do with the fact that we waited but it has me having 2nd thoughts now.  I think we will wait till 6 mos this time.

  • Wow, I have never heard 9 months. I thought I was the only one delaying until 6 months! Everyone I know that has kids Abe's age has already started solids.

But he is adorable!  My DH's parents must have waited until 9 months with him:)

  • I didn't want to start solids until at least 6 months. However, at DS's 4 month check-up, he wasn't gaining weight very well all of the sudden so my pedi recommended starting on solids. I wasn't completely thrilled with the idea, so we started cereal once a day and a veggie a few days a week. I wanted to make sure he would eat veggies really well before we introduced fruits. He just started getting some fruits in the last 2 weeks (some bananas and applesauce), because he was starting to get pretty constipated. He's system is much more regular now. I haven't replaced any nursing sessions with solids. He still nurses the exact same, he just gets a little snack twice a day now.
  • I wrote this same exact post the other day!  I am waiting until 6 months.  Even though my pedi said it was okay to start at 4 months, I did my own research and decided on my own to wait. I work at a daycare and a lot of my co-workers ask why I am waiting, as they obviously haven't read up on the latest and are just assuming that since everyone else starts their kids at 4 months then that must be the right age!
  • We're going to start baby-led weaning at 6 months.  No cereal, purees or spoons, just put it on the tray and let them at it.

this exactly... and she has recently syarted to be very interested in what we're eating so I dont think we'll have a problem there.

  • We planned to start at 6 months but the doctor suggested starting a week or two before his appointment so we can discuss how it's going.
  • I was told 9 months as well. Pedi just wants to avoid food allergies. I figure we'll know when DS will be ready. If that's 6 months, fine, if it's 9 that's ok too.
  • I'm waiting till 6 months. Pedi actually told me to start rice cereal in her bottles at 4 months but I won't be doing that.

  • At our checkup last week the doctor said it was fine if we wanted to start solids.  She said that at this point it's not for nutritional value but more to get the mouth used to it.  I have also read on different sites and articles that if your child is double their birthweight, can hold their head up, and shows an interest in food than they may be ready for solids.  DD hit all those marks and so the doc said it would be fine if we wanted to start.  We tried it for a few days, she got real constipated so we've stopped to see if the cereal is the culprit and from there we'll decide if we want to continue or delay for another month.  Prior to this checkup I had the 6 month timeframe as my goal but I just figured that if the doc said it was fine and everything I read said it's fine I didn't see anything wrong with it.

  • My MIL didn't feed my SIL solids until she was 12 months old, and there is nothing wrong with her.
  • We are waiting until at least 6 months.  If he still has the tongue thrust reflex, can't sit unassisted or just doesn't seem ready, we'll wait longer than that.
