I know nanny pay is regional but I am curious about how others handle vacation and sick time. We offer 2 weeks paid vacation but we never discussed sick time. (we were naive' and didn't know how to address it)
She has been with us for 6 months and has called in sick or needed time off for dr's appts about 4-5 times. We paid her for that time and either my DH or I had to take the day off. She has already asked for 3 days off since January 1 for Dr's appts. We have to discuss sick time but we don't know what the norm is.
How do you handle your nanny's sick days and/or personal time off for dr's appts, etc?
ETA: We just found out that our boys have to start 1 1/2 hours of physical therapy per week. So I need to save my very limited vacation time for that. It is stressing me out that I have to use so much for my nanny's paid personal days.

If you like her and she is a good fit then do what you can to keep her within reason.
I think personal days and vacation time are important. But I also know that most companies don't offer these benefits until a year of employment so I don't think it is unreasonable to go that route, heck you are already giving her vacation.

Last year (our nanny started in June) we offered 5 days of paid time off to be used for any absence from work. She only used 2. This year we have offered ten but I seriously doubt she will use them.
I would be concerned about her taking so much time off. Just like your employer needs to be able to count on you, you need to be able to count on her.

We're in the hunt for a nanny and I've talked to several friends. All of them do 10-15 PTO days which include vacation, sick, personal whatever. And a lot of them wake 5 days of that when they (the family) is on vacation. I'm thinking this is the way we'll go.
I've heard this. Usually 10 vacation plus 5 sick days. The vacation is usually 5 days as determined by the employer, and 5 days as determined by the nanny.
From those that I know provide paid time, the norm seems to be 10 days.
Honestly- what your nanny has taken seems excessive. Nannies do need time to take care of personal business, but as their job is one that others SO readily rely on and NEED them, they need to be really careful about taking time off.

Thanks for all of the great advice! You have definitely helped calm the knots in my stomach. We are going to sit down with her tomorrow and discuss this. I think it is appropiate to bring it up now in light of all of her day off requests.
And the good news is I just scheduled the boys first PT appt the day I have to take a 1/2 day b/c of her. So not a total loss!

With our current nanny, we offered 10 days Paid Time Off (PTO) to be used for any reason she was not working. 5 of those days were at our discretion (so when we when on our Disney trip).
We are seaching for a new nanny as ours is returning to school full time. I have increased the PTO to 15 days total (7 of our choosing, 8 of hers).
Additionally, we give 8 paid holidays. This is a month of time total that our nanny gets paid for (very generous in my opinion).
On rare occassions our nanny has asked to leave 20 or 30 minutes early to take care of this or that and we just let that wash by - but it's not a regular occurance.
I forgot to even add that into the equation - we provide all holidays paid too. I work in finance and if the market is closed than I am off and she has a paid day off. I am glad you girls reminded me of that b/c that needs to be part of our discussion with her.
