Do you prefer carpet in the bedrooms of your house?

Just curious.  I keep going back and forth on this.

Re: Do you prefer carpet in the bedrooms of your house?

  • no.  I hate carpeting.  I love hardwood and nice rugs.

  • I do, we have it in our living room, hallway and bedrooms.  Not in dining room or kitchen/baths
  • I like wood floors because they're easier to keep clean and I have allergies.

    .
  • I want hardwoods.. I have carpet in our bedrooms right now but plan on changing it in a couple years.
  • Nope, carpeting doesn't look as nice IMO.  Plus it traps dust and mold, so I especially don't want it where myself or my children are sleeping.

  • My personal choice is wood in the living areas and hall, carpet in the bedrooms. I hate waking up in the morning and walking on a cold floor.
  • carpet in the bedrooms.  I don't like getting out of bed in the morning and putting my feet on cold floors
  • We have carpet now, but I'd much prefer wood.  I hope to con H into putting it in the bedrooms someday.
  • I like the theory of carpet in the bedrooms, but not the actuality.

I can't stand wall to wall carpet in any room. It is too hard to keep clean. An area rug can always be hauled out to the driveway and attacked with the hose if it gets too grimy.

  • I think it does give a certain warmth or coziness to a room but I like the look of both and my dh really wanted carpet in ours so that is what we got..

    this exactly! I

I feel like no matter how much shampooing you do....carpeting is just never clean! I hate it!

  • I agree with all that was said about dust, cleanliness, etc.  It is just so cold here.  Nobody around here builds a house with no carpet.  It is almost unheard of.  I worry that all wood may be bad for resale.  I don't know.
  • I have my cons for each.  Carpet holds in odors regardless of steam cleaning and I hate the need to deeply vacuum corners and edges.  But unless you're constantly cleaning your hardwood floors, then you can see dust daily.  I dont' like rugs on hardwoods either because they slide and they're too pretty to cover up anyway and using stickies to keep them from sliding ruins the floors, or the finish.
  • I don't see how it could be bad for resale.

If there are hardwoods, you can always carpet over them. I always think of it as a good thing when I read "hardwoods under carpet" in a listing.

  • Every time someone asks this, I think I would prefer carpeting because it's warmer. But to be perfectly honest I never, ever have an issue with hardwood in the bedroom, which is what we have. It never even occurs to me.

From a cleanliness/allergy standpoint I'm all for hardwoods (DH and DS both have wicked allergic dermatitis).

  • We play on the floor a lot and love the soft carpet in the bedrooms.
  • We have had both and for some reason hardwood in the bedroom seems to have more dustbunnies than anywhere else in the house.  We have carpet now and it is warmer and looks "cleaner".  If I lived in a warm weather state I might think differently though.
  • Hey! I am coming in late on this, but we have recently hashed out this very question because we needed to decide on flooring for the new house. I wanted hardwood in the bedrooms, DH wanted carpet. Here's the breakdown of what we ended up deciding: solid surface (hardwood/tile) in the laundry, hallway, kitchen, dining, all bathrooms, and the office/nursery on the main floor and carpet in all bedrooms, the living room, play room, and theater room (and the steps). • We have all hard floors.  Hardwood in every room except for the bathroom and bathroom, which are tile.  I've always had carpet before this and didn't like it.  I *love* my hardwoods.  So much cleaner and better for allergies.  Plus, I like the look better than carpet.
  • Carpet because it is warm on the bare feet. Plus I much prefer to just have to vacuum vs having to sweep and mop my bedroom floors on a regular basis.

Well, if you think about it, the carpets get just as dirty, it's just the dirt gets caught in the carpet. Wood is so much easier to clean. That's enough to decide it for me.

  • carpet. For sure.

  • I much prefer carpet, but chose hardwood (with a rug) mainly because my kid pukes a lot.  We have been in our house less than a year and my almost 3 year old has thrown up at least 3 times on the floor in her room.  Much easier to clean up vomit on hardwood than carpet!
  • my issue with wood is we have pets and they scratch the wood pretty easily.  We just put brazilian cherry in the dining room 2 years ago and it has SOOO many scratches, it looks awful now.

I will always put carpet in the bedrooms and stairs.  too many accidents happen on hardwood stairs due to slipping.

  • I like carpet in the bedrooms.  That's the only place we have carpet in our house...we've got tile in our bathrooms, kitchen and utility room and hardwood in our family room, dining room, playroom, foyer, and hallways upstairs and down (we have a rug in all the rooms with hardwood).

  • Coming from a home that was 100% hardwood, we built and chose to do carpet in the bedrooms only.  For one thing, it eliminates the noise upstairs (if you have a 2 story home).  For another, it is much warmer in the winter!  And lastly, I HATED getting into bed and having to make sure there was nothing on our feet from walking around on the (clean!) hardwood floors in all the rooms!

I can tell you that I've loved having carpet in our bedrooms.  The kids can get down on the floor and play and roll around and it's warm.  I can lay in the floor and do my exercises too!  ;-)

  • Ugh, and I just had a flashback of how much of a B!TCH keeping those hardwood floors clean was.  Seriously, I'd much rather run the vacuum over carpet than "dust" up the dust bunnies and mop hardwoods.  I love my hardwood floors in the dining, living and keeping rooms of our home but they're labor intensive when it comes to cleaning.  The rest of our rooms have tumbled ceramic tile and marble floors.  FWIW, my allergies were WAY worse in our all hardwood home, ironically enough!
