Help! Mastitis = supply drop?

I BF my 11.5 month old DS. Never had any problems with mastitis or clogged ducts or anything, generally have had good supply (with slight dips for AF, stuff like that). I'm planning to continue BFing at least a few more months regularly and continuing with morning/night until he self-weans.

But now I'm worried - over the course of a few hours on Thursday morning as I was driving for a ski weekend, my right breast got painful, tender, a bit firm in one spot. I thought maybe clogged duct and did some massaging, etc. Then I started feeling icky- achy, fever, etc. Anyway, I called my OB who called in an antibiotic for mastitis, since it's most likely that's what it is. I haven't seen a dr. but it seems to be getting better now on day 3 of antibiotics, although still somewhat painful.

I'm most concerned because it seems like my supply may have taken a serious dip Either that or something weird is going on with DS. He's nursed like normal but a couple of times has seemed hungry after, and a couple nights has woken up at like midnight (almost NEVER happens) and is really just asking to nurse. And it definitely seems like my breasts are emptied much more quickly. It's most weird because this is just all of a sudden. Over the past months he's definitely gotten less BM and more solids.

Has anyone had mastitis and had a supply drop? Will it come back on it's own? Could the antibiotics be doing this?  Or maybe growth spurt?

Re: Help! Mastitis = supply drop?

  • I've mostly had oversupply issues, which caused my mastitis, but did have a significant drop in supply during and slightly after my mastitis bout.  I think it's from the stress of being sick, my supply came back just fine.  Try to stay really hydrated and rest.  Good luck.

  • I managed to come down with mastitis when my DS was 18 months after NEVER have any problems whatsoever.

I definitely noticed that he was fussy at night (we were/are down to AM and PM meetings).  I think I had so little I couldn't even let down.  Anyway, I just kept on our normal schedule and things went back to normal after a week or so.

Try to stay hydrated, rest and try not to stress/worry which will just make things worse.  GL!

  • I had mastitis & had a supply drop that lasted about 3-4 days. It will come back - try not to worry.

  • Thank you all so much for your responses, they make me feel so much better! I actually think today might be a little better supply-wise. Yay!
