Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Mirena = horrible acne?

Not only am I bleeding like a stuck pig (TMI, sorry), I have now been graced with the skin of a 14 year old boy.

Anyone else deal with this?  Any suggestions?  I'm thisclose to calling my doctor and having it removed ... I'm tired of bleeding and I was getting my pre-pregnancy skin back, finally.  Now I have huge, cystic acne on my chin and in my freakin' ear.  So embarrassing.

Re: Mirena = horrible acne?

  • I have mirena- I have more acne then I have had since I was 16- but it still is bearable because I never had bad skin.  I could totally see it screwing with your skin though.

  • I had it for 18 months and the acne didn't go away. :(

  • After reading bad reviews from Merina users, I decided not to get it.  There are just too many problems that women can have because of it that they don't even realize are BECAUSE of it until it is removed.  Acne was just one of them.  Head aches and muscle aches, fatigue, back pain....things that can seem like normal "I'm tired because I'm chasing after a kid" or "my muscles hurt cause I am getting older" ... once Merina was removed the problem disappeared.  There were a lot of other issues noted in the reviews.  So yeah...while I can't say I've personally experienced your problem, I think it is a very realistic possibility that Merina is causing an increase in your acne.
  • Arrrrrrrrrrrgh.  :(

    I did a lot of reading as well, talked to everyone I could think, etc.  Most everyone told me that they loved it ... A few people had not so great experiences but way more people loved it.  The acne kills me.  So does the non-stop bleeding that I've been graced with.  I'm supposed to call & make a follow up appointment soon to have it checked ... I may just have it removed.  Back to square one, I guess.  The mini-pill makes me crazy, condoms give me horrible UTIs.  What else is safe while nursing?

  • eh, I've got the non-hormonal IUD (paragard) and I still bleed a ton and have bad acne. :(
  • VCF woman!! You'll thank me when you finally give in and try them!
  • How long have had the Mirena? I got mine in October after my 2nd child. I bleed really bad for the first 3 months but now it is gone. I know someone who got the Mirena in and she had not recently had a baby. She bleed for a good 6-7 months. But now has very light if any bleeding. I maybe get one or two pimples when my period is due and my friends gets a little more around that time of the month. I would definitely hold out til 1 1/2-2 years before making the final decision on having it removed. It is so hard because everyone handles that kind of thing so differently.

  • It's not terribly surprising that it would cause acne.  It contains a synthetic progesterin (sp?), common acne causer.

    You're in L'ville, right?  If you have cystic acne, call to get an appointment at Associates in Dermatology.  I see two derms there and love them.  I've gotten cortisone shots when needed - and it's safe to do while nursing.
