How to transition from sippy to cup

DS has been using a sippy for a long time now and he will drink out of a straw.

When do you drop the sippy or when should we start that?

Re: How to transition from sippy to cup

  • I often let Jillian drink from my glass to help her learn.  Right now she is still very messy.  I figured that we'll make the transition when she has better coordination and gets more in her mouth and less down her front.

I'd love to hear from those that have made it through the transition though!

  • Ben still uses a sippy when he's drinking around the house or in the car.   He can use a regular cup though too and that's what he uses when he sits at the table and drinks.

I guess I started giving him a little water in a cup when he was 1-ish?  I know at our BCC class they had them use regular cups from the get go and Ben was only 9 months old so he didn't use one then.. But I would think I had him start playing with one sooner since I felt like he should learn for BCC.  :)

Just give it to him and see what he does.  It's funny at the very least.

OOOOH - or play with it in the tub!

  • My nephew uses a cup that functions similarly to a coffee tumbler.  It has a top that screws on, with a flap that closes off the drinking hole or opens up to drink.  It helped with the transition because the opening does not prevent spills, but is not too large, so you don't get giant messes.

  • We are about half sippy and half cup right now :) DS really likes to drink from our cups, so if there is just a little left then we let him. He took to it pretty quickly, and knows to put it back down when he is finished, I guess just from watching us. He got some kid sized cups for christmas, so we are using those more and more. I usually fill it less than half way to avoid a huge mess, and do he can finish all of it at once and not carry it around. Its going really well! We still have some spills, but usually not while drinking, more tipping it over when he's done or trying to walk with it and its too full. Also, he seems to have a harder time with water b/c he cant tell as well how much is in the cup, so starting with milk or diluted juice might be easier! GL!

  • Great idea Jill I will add one to bath time for play.

He has grabbed ours at times and he knows how to use it but he usually gets too  much water and dumps it on himself and the floor :(

Unfortunately it will be messy for awhile, so have some patience, start with water and just a little bit in a cup and let him explore how to use it.  As long as he is OK with using and not resistant, I think it will be good to make the transition.

  • We still use the sippy in the car or around the house too.  She gets a big girl cup at meals though.  I do need/want to get her to use a big birl cup around the house (keep it on the counter and she can drink as she pleases) because she is starting to call it a bottle, yikes!

I agree with playing with cups at bath time (we did this too) but we strongly discourage her from drinking bath water.

It still can be messy at nearly 3 years old.  Sometimes the cup slips and we have a spill, but its all learning lessons.

  • yeah, don't drink bath water!  yuck.  i would just fill it from the sout and get clean water.  you could also get a little pitcher and let him learn to pour too.  at our toddker class they pour their own water and its so cute!  ben likes to pour for his friends too :)

  • Like the others, Ella gets a sippy when walking around the house or when we are out and about, but meals are in a real glass.

I put about an inch of milk in the glass (juice size glass) and it took about a week for her to master tipping it slowly enough to drink without drenching herself. She ate all her meals that week in her diaper only. Now she is a pro and only messes up if I put too much in the glass. It seems like an inch is the magic amount for her.

  • I agree with others we do big boy cups at meals and sippys around the house.  We also have those tiny dixie cups in the bathrooms and he will often ask for some water and stand in the bathroom and have a drink of water in a big boy cup.  Its a very messy process and we will probably do it more this summer when he can be outside.

  • At daycare, they only give him cups.  That started when he moved into the bigger toddler class at 18 months.  At home I only give sippies because I really don't want to clean up that many spills (I'm busy enough cleaning up all the food he throws!).  He will take drinks of our cups all the time.  I figure since he uses them all day at daycare, its no biggie if I have him use sippies at home.
