3rd Trimester

High White Blood Cell Count

The past 2 times I had blood taken.. I have had a high white blood cell count.. apparently it is higher than the normal high that you get from pregnancy. I have to go to a hematologist this week and am freaking out a little.. Maybe it is nothing.. but anyone else have experience with this? What do they even do there?

Re: High White Blood Cell Count

  • Mine got up at a 17, but now is back down to a 12. I freaked out at first and they said it was pretty common. I go to a hematologist for being severely anemic and he looked at it also and said it didn't concern him. Still scary though! I hope that everything works out for you. Do you know what your count was?

On another note, I work for a doctor and he told me that sometimes we'll have viruses that we aren't aware of, and even a cold can elevate the WBC. Have you had a cold or something? He said he had a person in the ER with a WBC of 24 and it still didn't concern him that much, however it does need to come down!

    Hope this helps!

  • Good luck. I'm sure it will be okay! I believe it's suppose to be 10 and under. Keep us updated!

  • Mine went up to 19 last week and they kept me overnight in the hospital to make sure I didn't have an infection of some sort. They think it was a virus that my body was trying to fight off. It caused lots of contractions so they just kept me overnight to monitor the contractions and make sure it went down. It went back down to 12 within 24 hrs and the contractions stopped too.

It was a little scary but everything is OK. Good Luck! Big Smile

  • Mine have been high throughout my pregnancy, between 15-18. My doc doesn't seem concerned, she just said we should check it postpartum to make sure it returns to normal.

  • Mine has been high throughout the entire pregnancy. ?Started just slightly high at 11.5, then went up another point, then at my 20wk check was up to almost 16. ?The OB continues to check it (I have labs done almost every appointment), but hasn't wanted to do anything further. ?She did say that she is seeing it more often in her patients, so it may just be a "common" reaction to the pregnancy & added stress.
  • UPDATE: Went to the dr. today and my white count is higher at 19.1.. he did not seem super concerned but will call when they get the rest of the blood work in
