Who drank while pregnant??

I did not drink anything until well after three months but from time to time I would indulge in a glass of wine and didn't see a problem with this. I even had a glass sometimes in a bar/resturant. Just wondering who else didn't care if they got  nasty looks in public.

Re: Who drank while pregnant??

  • I had a sip of champagne at a wedding when I was 6ish months.

  • Yeah, that's a negatory.  I didn't even drink caffeine.  But I did eat sushi once.  It was free and I couldn't pass it up.
  • Well, I split 3 bottles of wine with my friend the Friday before POAS.  I still feel bad about that, but I had no clue I was pregnant.

After that, I had a sip of wine at 36 weeks at my cousin's wedding, I wanted to taste the wine.

And I had half a glass of sangria at 40 + weeks.

  • I don't see an issue with a glass here and there, but I wouldn't have a drink in public.  Maybe a sip of DH's glass at dinner but that's it.

this. even one glass can be harmful.

  • I had a glass of wine at a nice restaurant on our anniversary when I was 24 weeks- no one gave me the side eye, but it wouldn't have phased me if they had.

Other than that I had a couple small glasses towards the end (actually per my OB's recommendation due to insomnia).

  • I got drunk at a winery the weekend after we conceived...but I didn't know I was pregnant yet.  Once I found out I was pregnant...the only alcohol I had was wine at church communion.

I don't think this is true after the 1st trimester.

  • there were probably about 5 times I had a small glass of wine or champagne...  (NYE, Valentines day, night before my shower with my mom and sis, as my EDD came and went).

Not often, but once in a while.

I also had a cup of coffee a day and ate raw sushi (as my OB said- Japanese women have babies all the time- just know the source and avoid the high mercury fish)

    this.

  • I had 1/2 a glass of wine here and there.  My doctor gave the okay on this.

FAS is difficult to study, so we may never really have clear answers on this, which is why it is easiest (and probably most responsible) on docs parts to say "never."

IMO there are many, many things we are exposed to every day that can be harmful to a fetus.  We take risks every day.  You have to make your own judgments about what risks you will and won't take.

  • Not knowingly.  I had a pint and a half on Election Night when I met some friends out to watch the returns come in, and I found out the following weekend.  After that, nada.
  • To me, it wasn't worth the risk.  The one exception was while I was in Jamaica (I was 18-19 weeks).  I would take sips of my husband's drinks just to taste them, but I didn't have more than a sip.

  • I had a glass of wine the night before my bfp and that was the last alcohol I've had since then. I actually still haven't had any alcohol. Embarrassed I know it's ok when breastfeeding but I just haven't wanted to bother with it. Plus we co-sleep and I didn't want to take any chances.

  • "Although many women are aware that heavy drinking during pregnancy can cause birth defects, many do not realize that moderate or even light drinking also may harm the fetus. In fact, no level of alcohol use during pregnancy has been proven safe. Therefore, the March of Dimes recommends that pregnant women do not drink any alcohol, including beer, wine, wine coolers and liquor, throughout their pregnancy and while nursing. In addition, because women often do not know they are pregnant for a few months, women who may be pregnant or those who are attempting to become pregnant should not drink alcohol. "

  • My MWs suggested a glass of wine every now and then when I got pretty far along.  Can't sleep?  "Take a warm bath and sip some wine," they told me.  Think you're in labor?  "Take a warm bath and sip some wine," the touted.

  • Eh, it wasn't worth it to me.  I didn't drink caffeine either, unless I had a tension headache, then I'd have some regular coke.  But a glass of wine here and there once or twice during pregnancy is way better than smoking when pregnant, in my opinion.

my doula was the same way.  She even recommended it for early labor to help get through the beginning stages and rest up before the big show.

  • I had a (big) glass of wine on my birthday which was about a week before my BFP. Besides maybe a sip here and there of my DH's drink, I did not drink any alcohol. I really had no desire to.

  • oh-  and i have to add the term drank seems wrong.  And I totally get what the OP is saying with the question, but semantics can throw people into a tizzy.

But if I hear someone say 'i drank while pg' to me that conjures up images of drunkenness, but if they said i indulged in a glass of wine once in a while, it seems to be a diff story.

  • I didn't after I knew. I had a glass of wine on our honeymoon and about 3 Bud Limes at our annual Halloween party before I got the BFP.

I did drink caffeine, but mostly in the second trimester. Never more than a coke every other day or so.

this! My OB ok'd red wine in my last trimester for my sleep issues. I would enjoy 2 oz. or so every now and then.

This.  A stressed-out mama is much worse for baby, IMO.  Are there other ways to relieve stress?  Of course.  But some research has even shown some wine here and there is good for a fetus because it thins the blood.  Everything in moderation.

You can find anything on google. If you look at actual research you would find there isn't anything of substance out there to prove that small amounts of alcohol later in pregnancy are detrimental to the fetus.

  • I went out for my birthday the day before I found out...when we found out I had a sip of champagne to celebrate.  I didn't have anything after that and for about 5 months PP.
  • A glass of wine 2 or 3 times--on the recommendation of my OB.

that website even recommends to stop having alcohol while ttc-  it is a bit extremist and alarmist, not to mention not scientifically backed.  No one is saying it is ok to get hammered... but lots of medical professionals will say a glass here or there is ok

  • I'm not going to judge someone for their choices or what they chose to do at the recommendation of the medical professionals they hired to assist them during their pregnancy.

I don't know why you would risk it.  It is a fact that FAS peaks during the third trimester as it is a key time in brain development. Obviously, no one knows what exactly causes FAS and whether it is one drink or a 100 drinks that cause it. But at each stage of development there is reason to believe that alcohol consumption can play a role in FAS.

Ultimately each to their own. Those that made the decision to not drink have no more right, IMO, to judge those that made the decision to drink than those who chose to consume alcohol despite there being conclusive evidence EITHER WAY of the argument and saying it is fine.

Alcohol Consumption during Stages of Pregnancy & Severity of Effects

The Trimesters: Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC), Duration of Exposure and Dose LevelEach trimester of pregnancy marks a stage of fetal development and our understanding of FAS risk needs to be discussed in light of how the timing of fetal development interacts with dosage, duration of alcohol exposure and BAC.  In the embryonic stage: the third postconception week of human pregnancy is considered the critical period for teratogenic actions of alcohol to produce the most severe and characteristic features of FAS. Drinking an average of 3 drinks/daily during the period following conception and just before pregnancy is confirmed, increases the risk of having a FAS child. Occasional drinking during this period did not increase risk. The nervous system develops in the first 8 weeks, making the most damaging effects result in this period. Although damage to the brain may occur in the last trimester as well, vulnerability to brain damage is highest at 15-25 days. 18  There are also two periods of rapid brain growth in the 3rd month and from the 6th month to after birth. The CNS, heart, eyes, legs, arms, teeth, ears, palate, external genitalia are vulnerable to alcohol in the first trimester. Malformations common to these areas suggest that structural damage commence early.Research indicates that among heavy drinkers who continued drinking throughout pregnancy had offspring with higher incidence of birth defects than those who reduced or abstained in the 3rd trimester. 19  Women who drink moderately throughout pregnancy have also been found delivering offspring with adverse outcomes such as an increase in neurobehavioral problems even in absence of physical facial anomalies of FAS. 20  Those who drank at moderate levels and discontinued alcohol use at mid pregnancy fared better than continuous drinkers. Research findings indicate the peak BAC increases likelihood of aberrant brain growth. A key factor in determining severity of FAS effects may be peak BAC during the third trimester when it is a critical period for brain development. Peak BAC can significantly affect the minimum dose necessary for producing FAE. 21  Conditions such as binge drinking which affect peak BAC should be curtailed during pregnancy. Clarren?s data on animal studies indicate binge type alcohol exposure can alter brain function without physical malformations and this occurs early in gestation. 9
