DH went to London for the weekend so DD and I were alone, no big deal we had lots of nice plans. Saturday night DD wakes up screaming and running a fever, I give her some tylenol, some water, and take off her sleeping bag she goes right back to sleep and stays asleep until 8:30am. So that morning she is a little clingy/crabby but the fever is pretty much gone and she is eating drinking normally. I figure she is just a little under the weather no need to call the pedi. Anyway in the afternoon she is really crabby so we stay home and I just try to make her comfortable and alternate tylenol and motrin every four hours. At 6:45 pm she is exhausted and I put her to bed. Anyway DH gets back from London around 10pm, DD wakes up at midninght screaming running a high fever, etc. She then spends the rest of the night asleep on DH's belly. DH stays home with her today and takes her to the pedi first thing in the am, she has an ear infection (she has never had one before). I can't believe I missed, she was pulling at her ear a bit but she does this when she is tired. I feel like an idiot... and of course I made her suffer when she could have gotten the antibiotics a day earlier
Re: So basically I suck as a mom...
Don't beat yourself up over this! We didn't realize it when DS had his first ear infection - we just chalked it up to teething (he's had 10 or 11 total and is on his second set of tubes, so we're pretty good at figuring them out now!).
Now that she's had one, you'll probably be able to figure out if she's got one in the future.

Aw come on, you really don't suck! I missed an ear infection once. We'd been to visit grandparents and unusually for DD she slept all the way home, then got feverish at night. I just assumed a bad cold and was mortified two days later to be told it was an ear infection. Then my mom sent me a photo of our visit and sure enough in the picture DD was pulling her ear. Like the others say once you know what you're looking for you make less mistakes.
Thanks for reminding us the Mommy game is always a learning curve!
I never call the doc the first day of a fever. You have to give their body a chance to fight it off first. It could have been a virus and antibiotics wouldn't do any good.
There has been research lately indicating that doctors are giving antiobiotics for ear infections too often. The bacteria is becoming drug-resistant.
Thanks ali, that is reassuring actually this is the first ever DD has been put on antibiotics so I hope she reacts okay to them.
