Hospitals: NWMH vs. ENH

I am looking for a new OB since the my current doctor is out of a hospital that does not have a neonatal center.  I am debating between Norwestern Memorial and Evanston hospitals.  I recentally had a friend give birth at NW-Prentice; I was so impressed with the facility but am worried it is $$$$. I have a PPO, however I know there will be cost on my end.   Any thoughts or experiences?  I have scheduled 2 appointments with different doctors who belong to each hospital.

Re: Hospitals: NWMH vs. ENH

  • OB doc at Evanston, Dr. Kerry Swenson, I worked with her at a different hospital, when she left for Evanston was  devestated because she is such a great doc, so great when she left pretty much everyone one of her patients followed her, really nice, sweet, puts a great personal touch on every patients experience.

  • great, thanks for the rec!
  • I go to Mia Norlin at the Women's Practice, but the other doctors I've met there seem great, too. They are affiliated with NWMH and I will be delivering at Prentice. I can't speak for the costs of Prentice itself, but I can tell you that the max the WP charges for L&D is $5k. I have PPO that covers 90%, so I'm paying $500.
  • This will be our 2nd baby at Evanston Hospital. They've been just great. The doctors and nurses are so supportive and from speaking with friends who have delivered at Prentice, it seems that a smaller community hospital has its advantages. Price wise, I have no idea what the difference would be. We have a PPO but from what I figured our share of the cost is roughly $1 K, regardless of what hospital we're using.

Right now, I am in the same practice as Dr. Swenson.  She discharged me from the hospital last time.  I really liked her, but I was told she overbooks and always runs late.  With that being said, if she had more hours in the Lincolnwood office, I would definitely go to her.  Just be aware, that I am not such a fan of the other doctors in the practice.  There are 6 OBs and since mine left the practice, I have not found one I like.

As for ENH - I loved it there.  The staff was great, both in labor and delivery and post-partum.  I really had no complaints from my stay there.  A nice plus, they have lactation consultants on staff (which not all hopsitals have).

    Hope this helps!
