i'm sure people are going to jump all over me on this, but whatever.

my doxie just had a seizure. i know we should take her to the emergency vet or something, but it's midnight, my toddler is asleep, im 20 weeks pregnant, and there are 7 inches of snow and ice on our roads right now. everything is completely shut down, so even if i found an emergency vet open, i would have to wake up my toddler and chance these roads to get her there. not really something i am willing to do. this is the second seizure she has had, and i'm nervous that we are going to have to put her down or put her up for adoption bc if it's something serious, we can NOT afford treatment. literally, we don't have even an extra 20 bucks a month right now.

the first seizure was a couple months ago, and i honestly didn't even realize that is what it was until it just happened again and i was googling doxie health issues and came across a video of a doxie having a seizure. idk wtf to do at this point and am entertaining all kinds of worst case scenarios in my mind. and i feel like a terrible pet mommy for not knowing sooner and for not taking her somewhere tonight. but i just can't imagine it's worth risking a car wreck! idk, wdyt?

is your dog acting fine now?? seizures don't often = emergency treatment (not to mention the bill you will get holy cow). I would wait until the morning and take her in during normal hours. If you can't afford treatment, which most likely you will have to put her on meds, then pleaseee find a rescue-- in particular a breed-specific rescue to find her a home. GL

my cocker has seizures occassionally and lived till he was almost 17 with no need for meds. given your situation, id stay put till it's easier to get to the vet.

call emergency vets. See if there is anything you can do until you are able to pass roads safely.

You do your dog no good by killing yourself trying to get her to the vet in impassable conditions.

In your case, I would wait it out and call the vet in the morning. Maybe I'm a bad pet mommy too, but if the roads are icy and unsafe, I wouldn't be dragging my toddler out in it. Could DH take the dog to the vet tonight?

If you can't get her in to the vet tonight, just make sure to keep her comfortable and give her some extra love. Sorry you're in this situation.

My friends poodle has seizures, and has been fine after them. If it were me, I would not risk going out tonight. Just keep your dog as comfy as you can, and wait until it's safe. Good luck!

My mom's dog has seizures, a little more often now that he is getting older. The vet won't give them any meds for him because they just don't happen often enough, and normally they only catch him at the very end when they do happen.

I don't know why you would put him down, but I would just take him in the morning or sometime tomorrow. Sorry, I would not leave my house with a toddler, being pregnant in the middle of the night with icy roads.

she is acting fine now. a little sleepy, but it is midnight, LOL! if we have to give her up, a breed-specific rescue would be our only choice, no worries there. i'm hoping we can get her in somewhere in the morning, but most offices have closed for tomm bc of the weather. i'm going to call the emergency vet and just see what they say. thanks ladies!

I don't think there's anything they can do this second. I mean, seizure's over, right? I'd call the vet in the morning and see what they suggest. If you don't have money, you don't have it. It's not like you can rub pennies together and make them multiply, right??

When I was a kid, our cat had a seizure disorder. She had them so rarely that they didn't put her on meds. A friend of mine's dog had to take medication to control seizures, but it was relatively inexpensive.

Coming from an animal fanatic....if she's fine now, I'd just wait and make an appt. at my regular vet first thing in the morning. Thinking of the bill from the emergency vet would make me hyperventilate.

If I had that much snow on the ground, I wouldn't hit the roads either. Can you call the vet to ask what their advice is? Does your vet have an emergency number?

I fcuking HATE when people say "whatever you do, don't go to the Pets board." This is a PERFECT situation to take to the Pets board. Clearly no one wants you to risk your and your toddler's life on the roads, but if there is something you can do for your dog tonight, at home, that board would have the people to ask. Sheesh.

vets=business, I would dare to reach and say they are having a slow night and would love some business. I would never put a vet bill on a cc. Also your safety, ds and future lo are way more important than a dog.

You're doing the right thing. Don't risk driving for a bill you can't afford to pay. What does the vet think they need to do anyway?

the vets website just says to call the emergency vet after hours, which is who i called. i guess there isn't much else i can do tonight, but i am worried about her. at least she is fine now, not even acting a little funny.

ITA. On a side note, tell the vet you will get her seen tonight if they do house calls, and will only charge you a normal rate lol.

My emergency vet charges you $60 just to walk into a room. Not including their office visit fee, dr fee, emergency fee, and whatever you have else to pay for.

they want to do a brain scan. that's what she told me. and medicate her. bc the seizure lasted longer than 15 seconds, it probably caused brain damage is what she said.

My ds had a febrile seizure that lasted longer than 15 seconds and he is fine. I'm just thinking in my head how expensive that would be...medicating, labs, visit, scan...oh boy! I'm sorry you have to deal with this right now. But, it's just not safe to go out.

I'm a small animal vet tech so I hope I can help. Ideally, yes, you need to go to the emergency vet. However, given that you have a toddler and icy roads, that doesn't seem like a safe situation. Take her to your regular vet first thing tomorrow. Monitor her tonight...there is a chance she could have another seizure. Make sure she is somewhere where she can't hurt herself. If she does have another, stay with her but be careful! Some dogs bite out of confusion during/right after a seizure. Depending on the frequentcy of the seizures she may not meds. We usually don't prescribe meds unless the seizures are frequent...every month or so. Ask your vet if there are any meds you can keep at home and use in an emergency situation like this.

My dog has seizures several times a year. Sometimes twice a month, sometimes there is 6 or more months in between. We took him off meds since he has the same amt of seizures with or without. Unless he won't come out of the seizure, you don't need an emergency vet...there's not much they can do... At one point after a seizure my dog couldn't use his back legs for 12 hours and the vet said sometimes it can take 24 hours to stabilize brain activity and we didn't need to take him in until it had been longer than that. FWIW, meds for my dog, when he was on them, were only $10 a month (I have a small dog, too).
