Spit up/throw up question

LO will eat forever, he can easily empty both breasts (I can pump about 6oz when I am full).  After the last few feedings, he has been throwing up a lot, it looks like he is throwing up everything he just ate.

When he does this, should I try to feed him again because he just spat up all of what he ate?  Should I try to feed him a little bit less at each feeding? Is this just a normal of feeding? He is feeding every two hours right now.

 Thanks!

Re: Spit up/throw up question

  • Does he show any other signs of discomfort while eating or shortly thereafter? It could actually be reflux. There are many symptoms, and really, you only need 1 of them to be diagnosed.?

I would try feeding him less. Maybe limit the time that you feed him to 20 minutes and if he does throw up, feed him a bit more. (This was what was advised by our pedi)?

  • Don't have a response...but will be curious as to responses because my daughter is doing the same thing!  It's usually only after the left boob because it produces the most milk for some reason.  My friend said to try burping in between but not sure that is working either.

  • Also, if his breath smells like vomit that can be another sign of acid reflux too.

How long does he nurse at one session?

  • That sounds like a lot of milk for 1week old.  My DD spits up like that when she's eaten too much.  Their stomachs are so tiny at this point.

  • My DS would do the same thing when he ate too much. 6 oz seems like a ton for a baby that young to eat every 2 hours. DS just started to eat 4oz every 3 hours and he's almost 8 weeks (over 12lbs too).

  • When he spits/throws up, usually it means he needs burped or he ate too much.  Not to worry unless he stops gaining weight or starts losing weight.
  • I can usually pump an oz or two after he is done eating, so I guess he is not really eating 6 oz.

I started burping him during feedings, and it seems to be working so far.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions ladies!
