We have a nice armoire that is a natural wood finish right now, but I want to paint it antique white to match our crib...anyone done this before? Someone suggested spraying it, like with an air compressor, but not sure how well this works. And DIYers have any suggestions?
Re: Painting wood furniture? DIY project...
Make sure you sand it and prime it before painting. Also you need a good quality paint for wood. Otherwise it will chip off.
I have painted lots of furniture before and the most successful projects were when I primed the wood first.
I have never sprayed anything though...

We're planning on re-finishing a dresser. I've refinished tables before, and it's so important that you sand it thoroughly like pp said. Nothing is as important. wear a mask and you should be fine using an orbital sander.
As far as painting it antique white, did you just want to paint it that color, or do you want it to have any sort of special finish? That would make a big difference in how you go about the painting process.
The more you can "rough it up" with the sander the better. Use a 1/4 sheet sander with 60 or 80 grit sand paper. It will make a difference if the armorie is solid wood or particle board. If it is particle board go easier on it, but if solid wood, really rough it up. Best way to tell is with your touch, not your eye. You can use an air compresser to blow off the dust, but finish it off with a damp cloth. That will get all of it.
Before you prime, make sure you fill any holes or divets with wood filler. After the wood filler dries, sand it smooth. Use primer and use it liberally. Best to roll on, in less you have all the equipment to load paint into a hopper and spray it. After that dries (you may need two coats, depending on how dark the wood is) roll (or spray) your paint color on. Semi glosss is easiest to wipe clean from fingerprints, etc. You may wish to do trim work in a high gloss of the same color to give it more sheen. Paint all drawers and shelves separate. Should cost you less then $50 including all your paint and supplies, good luck!
