So, I normally shell out 100+ for my blonde locks, but DH and I are trying to save money for baby. I have avoided home blonde products because EVERYTHING turns my hair orange (I have dark blonde hair with red undertones, naturally).?

Clairol now has a "Brass Free" product that says it neutralizes reds and oranges to deliver a natural blonde look, for $9.

Do you think its worth it??

I'm a hairstylist and don't know much about the different box dyes but I've seen crazy stuff with people trying to go blonde with the boxes. With the economy I have a bunch of clients not coming in as often or bagging color all together but a lot of them we're just been foiling their part line it cost about $40 instead of $100 maybe something you can ask your stylist about?

Haha - I live in DC. Even hair cuttery charges 70 for partial highlights. UGH.

Tried it. I still pull red. The only thing I've used that didn't pull red was one of the Feria boxes...it was the brightest blonde and I think it was called champagne but I can't remember. I used it with a cap to create highlights.

Feria, huh? I don't know that I want to be BRIGHT blonde... but I will look for it tomorrow at Walmart ?

How about going to beauty schools in your area? I have a few beauty schools near me that will do full highlights for $35 and a haircut for $8. The beauty school students do it, but they are closely monitored by their teachers and I have always had good results.

I would suggest finding a nice salon and asking them if they have a training program they use for their junior stylists. Nicer salons do it and I did it at the salon I worked at. The are licensed cosmetologist the salon just has them work with a senior stylist for awhile to learn more before they go off on their own. Most of the time they need models to do their hair and show their senior stylist they know what they are doing (the senior stylist will supervise) it also is usually at a very cheap or no price!!! Call around! I wouldn't suggest a home box color especially blondes. If you are going to do it mix up a tiny bit and grab a piece from underneath and test it out on that hair for about 20 minutes.

Are you close to a Sally's Beauty Supply? They sell salon products that your stylist might use. If you have red undertones get a color with an Ash or blue base

I use Wella products and I love them. They have a demi permnet that way if the color isn't what you want, it will easily wash out.

Good call! I just googled, and found one that will do it for $50 - which is practically free here!?

I have red hair and everything turns my hair orange too. Most box color isn't meant for anyone with red color in their hair. I've never used "Brass Free" but I have successfully colored my hair blonde. I used color specifically designed for women with red in their hair and I used a blue toner afterwards. It worked like a charm.

If you do it yourself, it might not come out super great. You may want a back up plan (ie: coloring your entire hair brown or something)

im a hairstylist also. DONT DO IT. if your hair is naturally dark is is going to turn brassy when you use a boxcolor reguardless. you have to use a stronger developer and most box dyes only have a 20 volume peroxide developer. maybe see if your salon has any promos or coupons on their website. ours does it occasionally. or maybe talk toyour stylist and see if she can do any kind of promo for you. at our salon it costs way more for a corrective color than it does just to get it done...so i think youll be saving money in the long run to just get it done professionally.

I have had A LOT of experience dying my own hair blonde. The only thing that has never turned my hair orange or something other than blonde, are the Frosting Kits. Like the ones where you pull hair thru the cap. Pulling long hair thru those caps is NOT a good idea, but for $10 you get a half decent dye job. I have found that using purple conditioner helps to keep blonde nice and not yellow. Its not worth buying a cheap brand tho. Thatll wreck your hair as those are more harsh.

I'm a haircolor tech and I also agree not to use box color! It will most likely leave your hair brassy. Ask for partial foils and jut get the top and sides done, or go to a school! Also..if you find your hair turns brassy you should pick up some "purple shampoo". It's a toning shampoo for grey or highlighhted hair. The purple will help cancel the brass and you only have to use it 1-2 times a week...keeps your color fresher longer:) Good luck!
