Anyone use a straw sippy instead of a regular sippy? I need to use a straw one with Jacob to help strengthen his oral muscles. When do you think I should start introducing it? And how do I teach him to such from a straw???
I just introduced a straw sippy two weeks ago. I am doing the Nuby Flip and Sip and I find it kind of hard to get water out of, you have to kind of mush the straw and suck. You may want to look for an easier one. Jocelyn could get liquid up a straw (like my drinks) a while ago. I don't think it is ever to early to try, I never taught her, she just attempted to suck on the straw and eventually liquid came up!

I will def. say that a regular straw u use at a restaurant is much easier to drink from then any of the straw sippies cuz they are much thicker and sturdier. You could even start practicing with u holding a regular cup with a more flexible straw (ones at restaurants)so he can get the hang of the sucking but on something with alil more give.
He doesn't naturally know to close his lips around it and suck... anyone else have this problem? I'm not sure how to teach him... he just kind of licks it and bites it like it's a toy because it is so small compared to a nipple on a bottle...

Just keep offering it. That's how Allie was at first... but she learned how to suck from it.
Maddie had trouble with a straw for a while too. I took some of my milkshake once and filled the straw up and held my finger at the end, and then let her drink what was in the straw- just so she would figure out that yummy stuff comes out of the straw. It didn't take her long to get the hang of it after that .

We were also told a straw sippy would help strenghten Eli's oral muscles. We like the Playtex sippies the best. I don't recommend the Nuby sippies, they're very hard to drink from. What worked for us was giving him a juice box with a straw, and then when he put his mouth around the straw, I gave it a little squeeze so juice would come out the top. Then he would suck on the liquid coming out, in turn sucking more liquid out. That's how we taught Eli to drink from a straw, and I had been trying everything at that point and nothing worked. That said, Eli did not drink from a sippy at all until 11 months, even though I constantly offered him one months before that.
Re: All this talk about sippys has got me thinking...
Savannah only uses the straw sippy. I do have other ones (the nuby and playtex ones for water), but she doesn't get nearly as much out of them.
I knew the straw ones worked well b/c when we were at a restaurant I just tried her drinking my water out of a straw and she did great!
I have heard that the straw sippies are the best kind - for teeth and speech. HTH!
