Success after IF

What products did you use most when you first brought baby home?

My good friend is heading home today after having a baby boy.  She's out of state and I want to send her a care package with items she will use in the coming weeks, any suggestions.  She's planning on breast feeding.

 Thanks Ladies

It's been a long journey. TTC since 9/06. multiple IUI's and IVF's and 4 m/c's. IVF#3 = BFP, twins, induced at 34w6d due to baby b passing away (no explanation). Delivered on 35w1d, Baby A - baby girl, and Baby B - baby boy, our little angel.

  • Hey!

gripe water!  Who knows if it really works, but we loved it.  It is supossed to settle their stomaches so they are not as fussy (AKA screaming her head off)

  • Loading the player...
  • I just sent my friend a big box of diapers.  I knew she wanted Pampers Swaddlers based on her registry, and I am hoping that saves her a trip to the store.

I also hear that Lansinoh nipple cream is good for BFing.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • Snacks!! It was hard finding time to eat in the beginning because I was constantly nursing DD and had to have foods that I could eat one-handed. I ate a lot of snacks vs regular meals at first. Also, blankets/wraps to swaddle DD, gas drops (didn't work for us, but lots of people love them), diaper rash cream (DD was allergic to huggies wipes and we learned it too late), diapers, wipes... and maybe some gift cards to carry-out type restaurants (subway was my favorite since I had given up deli meats while pregnant... I ate subway everyday for about a month :) )

Those would have been helpful for me at least :)

  • I second the Lansinoh, which is something I did not think of before hand!

If you didn't want to mail something really bulky, you could include a gift card to a Target/Walmart for diapers.

One of the best gifts I got when DS and DD were born was slipper socks!  They were so warm and cozy!

After 20 months TTC with PCOS, we were blessed with twins!

  • We had to run out to the store and buy gripe water. Matt had reflux and would get hiccups like crazy, and the gripe water worked. We also ran out to buy more sleep sacks, since he hated to be swaddled, and we wanted to make sure he was warm enough. I also ditto the snacks.

  • Hi wormies!  If she's nursing, maybe the lansinoh (sp?) cream for the soreness or bra pads?  (I only BF for 3 days so this is just a guess).

But for the baby maybe a small pack of diapers (I really liked pampers swaddlers when DD was little)?  I would do size 1 since it seems like a lot of babies outgrow the newborn size.

Or maybe a gift card for a chain restaurant in their area?

  • Ditto PP's about the Lansinoh lanolin ointment.  Also, I loved my Boppy pillow for the early BFing days when DS would nurse like crazy.  It saved my arms!

  • I totally agree about the snacks! :)  When we first came home, the last thing on my mind was sitting down to a meal, but I loved having lots of yummy (some healthy, some not so much!) snacks in the house.  My DD nursed constantly at first, so it was nice to just be able to sit on the couch and munch!  Another thing that might be super nice is a good water bottle.  I drink a ton of water now (and I thought I drank a lot before!) and I like having a water bottle that I can just refill.  It helps me keep track of my daily intake and its easy to carry from room to room!

  • Burp cloths!!  We just used cheap Gerber cloth diapers as burp cloths.  We went through them like wildfire for the first few months.  Major spitting up and any number of other "accidents."  Must have handy at all times.

Childhood cancer (DH) + chemo + radiation = 0 sperm.
    LO #1 - 1 unmedicated/self-monitored IUI w/ donor sperm.
    LO #2 - 1 m/c, 2 BFNs, 4th IUI worked (unmedicated/self-monitored with new donor sperm).
    Life is beautiful!

ditto on the snacks!! i would have loved that

i wouldn't personally send any blankets b/c we got a million from people! i don't know what to do w/all of them!

the lansinoh nipple cream is great but if she already got a tube i doubt she would need another... i still have a ton left in my tube and i used it a lot in the first few weeks but haven't needed it once DD got the hang of it.

disposable nursing pads might be helpful or milk storing bags if she is pumping?

i'm sure she could always use diapers..if you know what brand they want, get some nb size and the next size up b/c they may have already gotten lots of nb size if she had a shower (plus you get some at the hospital)

and, if you're feeling generous, a spa certificate for a mommy massage would be amazing!! :) i would have loved that!

  • My LO was a lot smaller than I had anticipated, so we needed to go buy things for a newborn......undershirts with hand coverings that snap on the sides, sleep and plays, and newborn diapers.  We have tons of size 1 diapers, but they are too big for LO.

If you know the size of the baby, if he is small, she may need newborn items.

This exactly.  We had very few newborn items.  DS is still in newborn diapers at 3 weeks.
