Q about organizing baby's clothes

how do you decide what to hang in the closet vs what to put in the drawers? we are having B/G twins so.. should I have a drawer of boy stuff and a drawer of girl stuff? where do I put the neutral stuff? tia

Re: Q about organizing baby's clothes

  • We only have the closet, so I hung up "outfits" that had matching tops and bottoms or sleepers, girl stuff to the right, boy stuff to the left.  Then we have two, 3-drawer organizers that sit on the floor.  One for each baby, top drawer for hats, socks, booties and pants, middle for onsies, bottom for more onsies or other clothes that don't fit in the other areas.  I divided neutral stuff into whatever baby's drawers seems less full (so if our boy was low on onsies, I put them in his, etc.)

  • With DD, I ended up only hanging up dresses.  Anything that was on a hanger never got worn, so I stopped using them.

I haven't decided how to organize the dresser yet, though.

sounds like you have a really good system! I am soo overwhelmed...

we have 3 drawers in our changing table/dresser and we are using the top 2 for cloth diapers.. not sure what to put in the bottom.. pjs maybe? then we have a tall dresser with 5 drawers... I figured maybe bibs, hats, socks, burp cloths, etc in some of the drawers.. we'll see!

so here's a dumb q.. if you were hanging an outfit (shirt and pants) did you hang the pants next to the shirt? did you get a hanger with the clips for the pants? they seem like they will just fall off a regular hanger... TIA

  • My girls have a huge closet so some items are hanging and some are in baskets.  I actually had a blog post last year with pictures of their closet. Here's the link:   https://thegreatumbrellaheist.blogspot.com/2009/07/girls-closet.html

Your closet is identical to mine. I am happy to see all you were able to fit in there.

  • I hung "fancier" onesies, shirts, sweaters and outfits.

I put basic white onesies, sleepers and pants in the dresser drawers.

I would put pjs/sleepers in that third drawer.  That way they're easy to get to for night time changes.  For the 5-drawer dresser, just kinda play around with what fits where to be honest.  :)  I had to be creative since our nursery is only I think 10x11?  We just didn't have room for dressers with two cribs, changing table and a glider.  I stuffed my changing table with tons of stuff too, so our closet is really organized so that I can get most everything else in there.

For outfits with pants, I used the hangers with the little clips on them.  I think I started with 10 of them (two per set) and still need probably another 10.  They were $2.50 at BRU.  I have a bunch of regular hangers too without the clips that I used for dresses, overall outfits, sleepers, etc.  It was just easier for us to do it this way.  :)

  • I'm glad you asked this and I love seeing everyone's replies! My mom will be visiting this week and I think our project will be washing and organizing baby clothes and other supplies.

We have a 6 drawer dresser, so I'm thinking that we'll have one drawer for boy clothes, 2 drawers for girl clothes, 1 drawer for neutral clothes, and then 2 more drawers for things like blankets, hats, socks, etc. The dresser is in the closet (we took the doors off the closet) since the room is small and we have to fit 3 cribs.

I have 30 baby clothes hangers (none with clips) and will probably hang dresses and cute outfits. So those clothes will hang right above the dresser. Then we have a high shelf where I imagine we'll store extra diapers and things like that.

I've registered for 6 cute fabric storage baskets but haven't gotten any so far.  I want to use the baskets on the open shelves of the changing table to hold diapers, wipes, burp cloths, crib sheets, blankets, etc.

One thing we'll have to figure out is what size clothes to keep in their bedroom. People have given us clothes of all sizes, but it seems to make the most sense to only have preemie, newborn, and maybe 0-3 clothes in the room for now, then switch them out as needed as they get bigger. We have so many boxes of clothes in the attic!

In the closet I have overalls, jackets, dresses, skirts, and a couple blouses.  In terms of their dresser, we have 4 small drawers on the top and then four larger drawers beneath that.  Currently the 4 small drawers are (1) Long sleeve onsies, (2) shirts (mostly long sleeves), (3) short sleeve onsies, and (4) socks, hats, bloomers for dresses/skirts, and other random stuff.  The large drawers are (1) sleepers, (2) pants, (3) sleep sacs, and (4) blankets.  I (1) gowns, (2) onesies, (3) pants, and (4) socks/misc and sleepers in two of the big drawers (dressier day ones in one and true sleepers in another), and two big drawers of blankets.  And that may have had a couple iterations too.  Just go with something that makes sense and just be prepared to change things if it turns out something else may work better.  Good luck!

  • I have our boy/girl stuff organized like this:

    1. 1 drawer for girl accessories (socks, hats, headbands, etc)

    2.  1 drawer for boy accessories

    3. 1 drawer for girl current size onesies, sleepers

    4. 1 drawer for boy current size onesies, sleepers

    5. 1 drawer for girl current size outfits

    6. 1 drawer for boy current size outfits

Then in the closet, I hung up any nicer dresses, outfits.  And then finally, in a hanging closet bag, I put all of the clothes for the larger sizes.  So I have a section of 3 month, 6 month, etc that I will then transition into the closet.

  • I found this overwhelming too & still do, since I don't know what will happen when the clothes get bigger & drawers dont hold much. Here's my system:

    1. Closet- got a closet organizer at lowes that divides one side iwth a top & bottom rods, then shelves down the middle, then single 'regular' height rod on right. The 2 level ones are girl up, boy down. I got those plastic things that you can hang on the rods & mark for different sizes to organize on the rods. THey are awesome & I'm so bummed I didn't get htem til they were over 3 months old b/c some of the newborn & 3 mo got lost int eh closet & never worn. Those rods have anything that is not a onesie or pants, so sleep n plays, overalls, dresses, sweaters....The shelves have baskets (or not) and have sheets, towels, blankets, etc. The single rod side has fancier clothes, holiday stuff, winter coats, etc.

    2. dresser- only has 3 drawers. Made a big mistake with this one, 3 drawers is not enough.  I got the spring loaded drawer divider things at Target & each one has 2 in it, for 3 sections in each drawer.

top drawer- PJs/unisex onesie things/unisex socks

middle- current size boy shirts/pants/socks & other random accessories

bottom- current size girl shirts/pants/socks & accessories (like tights, baby legs...)

Door to the right of the drawers (I should've gotten a 6 drawer dresser & missed that it was an option on the furniture info grrr, although I did get a 2nd tall dresser for when they are in separate rooms so it's in a different room & has random stuff in it) has 2 shelves, right now has swaddles on one shelf & extra diapers & wipes on the other.

     GL!

  • I hung dresses, dressy clothes, outfits. I bought a bar that hangs down and gives me a second bar, so DS is on top and DD's clothes are on the bottom. In the 5 drawer dresser we have:

    top-Bibs and burpclothes

    2nd-PJs

    3rd-DS onesies and pants

    4th DD onesies and pants

5th-stuff they have outgrown and need to be packed away when I find time

The drawers on the changing table:

one has 2 plastic bins one for DSs socks and the other for DD's socks

the other drawers have sheets, blankets, and such.

Thanks!  We added that second lower shelf/rod ourselves - trying to make the most out of that space.
