2nd Trimester

The Miss America Pageant

There are 53 contestants. Did they add 3 states sense I graduated school? I'm sorry, you can't be Miss America if your from Puerto Rico or The Virgin Islands. Neither of those are states and therefore not part of the United States. Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Puerto Rico of The Virgin Islands. But they're not states. And shouldn't be in the pageant.

And really 53? Why the odd number?

Re: The Miss America Pageant

  • THANK YOU, I thought I was the only one annoyed by alloing Puerto Rico and the VI's I just think that is dumb. And I think I remember wondering about the odd number too once isnt it like DC?

Ah! Yes, District of Columbia. Haha, I knew it wasn't a state but it didn't register in my brain. At least it's IN the United States.

  • Okay, so I totally and completely agree with you... or at least I did until about 2 seconds ago.  :)  I thought your post was awesome and it was something I was thinking also, so I mentioned it to DH.  He explained it to me.

There are not 53 states, you are correct.  :)  But it's called the Miss America pageant, not the Miss United States pageant (bear with me, I have a point, lol).  DH explained that the US owns Puerto Rico, and it and the Virgin Islands are territories of the US (it gets more technical, but I guess we don't "own" the Virgin Islands, just Puerto Rico).  In fact to quote Wikipedia: "The U.S. Virgin Islands are an organized, unincorporated United States territory... [and] they are U.S. citizens."

As for the District of Columbia, I still have an issue there with that one sorta.  They are IN Maryland.  They are not their own state (but I guess one could argue that Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands aren't either), but I think that having a Miss Maryland already represents District of Columbia.  But that's just my two cents.  :)

I swear I'm not trying to be bossy, or "prove you wrong."  I just noticed that you were thinking the EXACT same thing I was and I got answers to my questions from DH and I thought I would share.  :)  Hope you get a kick out of it.  :D  (Can you tell I'm bored?  Hehehe...)

  • Ah. Yes. That's true that they are territories. And I agree with your about the District of Columbia. But I'm still not sure that I think all three of them should be included.

And I don't think your being bossy or trying to prove me wrong! Lol. I'm getting a kick out of the pageant. I've never watched it before. (Or any beauty pageant for that matter.) I bet Mario Lopez is loving his life.

  • I'm not so sure I think they should be included either, I just kinda understand why they are now.  :)  DH was actually the one who told me I was being "bossy" lol.  He was like, "Babe, all you're gonna do is make people angry at you and then you're gonna get upset and cry... again."  Hehehe, to which I replied, "Don't worry about me, I've got my big-girl panties on."  I thought it was funny but he looked at me like I was crazy.  ;)  Which I probably am, lol.  And yes, every straight single guy in the world probably hates Mario Lopez right now.  ;)  Does anyone else think he hasn't changed AT ALL since "Saved by the Bell"?  ;)
  • It was a lot of fun to watch!  My twin sister competed in Miss America as Miss Nebraska in 2001 and so I have been a fan ever since.  I thought TLC did a nice job with the broadcast.  They kept it running at a quick pace.
  • He hasn't changed! Well, except for those horrible muscle shirts they always had him in. I wonder if he calls his girlfriends mama haha.
  • I agree with the poster who said it is the Miss AMERICA pageant.  Not states.   I don't see anything wrong with Puerto Rico and whoever else being included.  It's not that concerning.   Besides, every country has their own pageant, if they weren't included with America -  who would they be included with then?

  • I never thought about it being more than just the states, but I see it now.  I've been watching it while I internet surf.  I'd love to see a pagent with a variety of "beauty" but who am I kidding!  It just bores me as it is

I'm with you on the variety. They all look the same to me. And I hate how they look is like the standard of what is "beautiful". Lets get some sexy plus size woman on that show! Maybe some with tattoos!

They do all look the same, & sadly that is the point.  I can't tell them apart whatsoever.  You would hope that at some point the standard of beauty could possibly change, but I don't see that happening.  I would love lovvvvvve to see some plus sized women, short women, and even heavily tattooed women!  Up close half of those girls aren't even attractive.
