Target throws out all their baby stuff!

When I bought a clearance pnp today and was talking to the clerk about it, she said "you should see all the furniture and kids stuff we throw away! It's amazing". Yeah, everything on display (carseats, pnp, swings, strollers, everything!) goes into the trash. Nice. You think there'd be a shelter or charity they could give it to.

Re: Target throws out all their baby stuff!

  • Yeah.   That is really nice.  They should at least donate it.  I know they barely put the stuff together at my target.  Maybe that has something to do with it.

  • A lot of companies do this. I just read an article about H&M - they rip and shred their clothing and burn some of it. Apparently this is common practice with many stores.

It's sickening how wasteful this world is and how people in need can get forgotten.

its possible that its not safe after its been messed with so much. the last thing theyd want is for it somehow getting back that target donated some things that hurt a child

  • WHAT?! That's insane! I think I need to get a part-time job at Target just so I can take that stuff home.
  • They give many, many things to the Goodwill Store.  Last week, I saw brand new Graco strollers there from Target.  They give a lot of their rejected items to GW.

For safety reasons to make sure the items aren't compromised, I'm pretty sure no one can sell floor model carseats.  Don't know about hte rest.

  • There's probably a liability involved. If it's already been put together or used it could jeopardize the safety. I worked in the food service and we couldn't donate food after the shift because of liability if there were an allergic reaction or something like that. I'm assuming they have to work under the same precautions.
  • Thats lovely. Another company waisting.

  • Most of the display items are specifically made to be displays and are not functional.

Our Target donates slightly damaged or unsold items to Goodwill. They get a huge tax write-off from it. The only things that are "thrown away" are items damaged so badly they can't be reused, or things that we be unsanitary to be resold or reused. And they are returned for salvage, the store doesn't just pitch them in the dumpster.

I worked at Target for several years. Trust me, most of the stuff is not thrown away.

i could see that with floor models at a heavily populated store like target it would be a liability to donate them. and i am sure they aren't constructed very well. now if they threw away boxed merchandise that was just excess, or clothing, i would think that was sad and should be donated. but the floor models could be dangerous.

  • DH used to work at Pier One and they also throw out things that are barely damaged if it doesn't sell quickly enough after being put on clearance.  They used to have people dumpster diving in the back of the store.  lol

  • and again - no one can see past "zomg wasteful!" to see what a liability it could be.

  • The display stuff is generally put together badly and/or trashed. You don't know what the customers have done to it, so it isn't safe to give to a shelter. (I saw a couple shaking the heck out of an infant car seat once, holding it upside down, trying to see if they could get it loose from the base. Confused)

They don't consider the things to be safe, so they don't give them away. One of the charities I used to volunteer at recieved a lot of donations from them, though; mainly things like clearanced clothes, diapers, and wipes.

  • At this point I can't really fault Target for that policy. There are way too many fivilous lawsuits and they have to protect themselves. It's still wasteful, but I totally understand why they do what they do.

    H&M.... not so much.

I didn't think of it that way, and I can now. But other stores do just throw out perfectly fine clothing and slash it and destroy other products so that others cannot use it, you can't deny this.

But if Target gives new strollers and the like to Goodwill, then good for them. That's great.

I'd never would have thought of that. Ewww...that'd be really gross.

  • Glad to hear that it's not usable stuff. Love me some Target.

  • Every Tuesday, I try to hit up our Goodwill because the Target down the road brings almost a truckload of stuff they couldn't sell. I mean I've bought new dishes, clothes, shoes, purses, etc for like $1 each item. Even a plasma TV wall mount for $5. I'm sure they can't donate the carseats or other things because of liability issues.

  • Okat, DH and I both work for Target and I agree with everything Meggiekins says. Just so everyone knows: ALL displays in furniture and Infants are Display Only items. The manufacturer now sends product that is specific for displays. Target doesn't even put anything together anymore, they hire an outside company to come in and build everything everytime the department resets. I get so sick of people begging to buy the display. I tell people how it's made as a display and put together shoddily and we don't sell them for your children's SAFETY! They don't care! Also, everything that is marked clearance 75/90% off and doesn't sell gets salvaged and donated to Goodwill. Also, certain things that are returned and marked "Green" Defective will also be donated to Goodwill. I can certainly say that Target is not wasteful. There are such specific guidelines for salvage items. The only thing Target is wasteful with is alcohol. If it's returned we dump it down the drain. Last week I had to dump a bottle of vodka and a 6 pack because someone returned it. Lol. Sorry for the lack of spaces, typing on my phone.

I'm glad to hear this. I understand the liability thing but I would hate to think of all that stuff just ending up in a landfill or worse.

  • Oh yeah, Goodwill makes a pickup at our store two times a week. I constantly go to the Goodwill near my house because I know my Target donates there. I have picked up so many things from there. I got a Graco stroller new in box that was salvage at Target (it was returned and already out of Target's system so it automatically goes Salvage) at Goodwill for $15 (regularly $80)!

I might just be checking them out soon!!

  • I KNEW they'd do that...when I was still pregnant, I was registered for the graco melbourne set--travel set, highchair, etc...I didn't get it all so I waited for the completion coupon to buy the travel set. By the time I went to get it--they were out of stock and discontinued. I begged and begged for the display model--they said there was no way--legally--they could sell it, and I'd have to go online to see if it was available there. Luckily, it was--but it was the principle of the matter...I knew they would just throw it away.

They threw it away because Graco specifically sent them Display only models. A lot of them don't even have all the parts. They are out up so you get the basic idea.

I agree- I use to be a manager at Target(ETL) it is all computerized as to what can be donated and what needs to go to the trash. They scan it for a return and it says where it needs to go. They donate a ton of things and people should be thankful that they throw displays away etc.... I'd rather a poor child not have a highchair than one that could hurt or kill them.

  • Target can't sell the display car seats!  Next time you are there, take a look at the car seats.  On the fabric, you will find a tag sewed in that says "FOR DISPLAY ONLY" These seats are not suitable for sale.

  • Lots of other major retailers do the same thing. My dad works at a waste management plant that burns trash to convert into energy. They buy trash from neighboring states and have contracts with a lot of large companies.

If a store has a ton of merchandise (literally, it needs to be over a ton) they can't sell, they are able to write it off on their taxes as a "loss" if it is destroyed -- they throw it in the trash and a private company picks it up and takes it to a trash plant to have it burned.

They will be credited for the full value of the item if it is disposedof this way, whereas if they donate it they are only credited for what it will re-sell for at the Goodwill -- which is a HUGE difference, esp. in the clothing market.

So even if Target does donate some stuff, I can undertand why (other than the liability issues) they would want to get rid of other stuff by trashing it.

  • speaking of H&M, they just got sued for having too much lead in their accessories.  :(

Yeah, I don't have a problem with it at all. You just know they didn't put in all the bolts or screws and have no idea where they are now, and can't find the booklet that goes with it, etc.
