Infertility

How much did you spend on your meds for IVF?

My DH and I met with our RE this morning and it has been determined that after 5 failed IUI's it's time to move on to IVF. I am courious how much the medications cost as we were given a price range between $2000-$4000. Also did your insurance cover any of the meds?  Thanks!

Re: How much did you spend on your meds for IVF?

  • We were given the same price range for ours. Unfortunately our insurance isn't covering any part of our IVF.

  • My meds were closer to $6000 if I had to OOP.  All insurances are different, call them to get all of the facts.  You don't want to be anywhere in the process and have any surprises.
  • My Meds are covered so I end up paying around $250 or so per cycle.

  • my insurance covers IVF and IVF meds.  I'm blessed and very lucky to say that I have no copay for the IVF appointments or procedures.  My med copay was about $150.

  • We were given the same range for meds. Our insurance doesn't cover anything fertility related, past diagnostics. We have been very fortunate in that our follistim was donated to us. All other meds added up to about $2500.00 per cycle. I should note that I had to use two vials of menopur per day (some people only have to use one), so that was an additional cost.

    Good Luck!!

  • My insurance covered my meds, so i just  had a copay of $267.00 but if I had to pay out of pocket it would have been close to $4,000 (IVF meds plus Lovenox.

  • We are in the process of getting our meds now and it looks like they are going to be around $3,500 and that we will have to pay $80. We have insurance that covers $15,000 lifetime maximum and that includes meds so they rest will go toward that. Once DH has his surgery the insurance will be used up and we'll be OOP, but of course I'm thankful for the insurance we do have.

  • Thank you for your responses. Our insurance has a $10,000. lifetime coverage for IF but it does not cover the meds.
  • Our insurance paid part of the cost.  It was $4500, but our part was only $1400.

  • Mine was over $7,000.

I was taking 4 Menopur a day!  Luckily, I do have some insurance coverage, so I only spent $2,000.

  • Absolutely no IF med coverage at all (my insurance covered my PIO, Vivelle, and the pills and nothing else.)

I think by the time it was all said and done, I paid about 4500-5000 for meds... it would have been more but I got some donated to me which saved me a good bit when I needed more menopur.  I have a little left over, but I think it all balances out.

By the end, I was injecting 300 follistim and 300 menopur (4 vials) a day, plus ganirelix. Yikes.

A word of advice: do not start calculating how much each shot costs!

  • I have no coverage for IVF or meds so everything was OOP. However, I was really lucky and had some of my meds donated through the OOP meds that Tab is taking care of.  I can't be sure of an exact total because I ended up stimming for 14 days which was much longer than was planned.  But I would say total my meds would have been between $3,000-$4,000 if I had paid for the meds that were donated as well.

  • I have a lifetime insurance max of $15000 for infertility.

I burned through 50% of that on $7k of drugs for a canceled cycle (poor responder).

I was very fortunate to be in a research study that paid for 2 cycles of Gonal-F (about 14 boxes total, I think).

Now we're on a donor cycle and all my meds are OOP. Fortunately the recipient drugs are pretty cheap. My husband's insurance will pay for part of the donor costs, though he's only got $7k left of coverage.

  • 3k. For this cycle they'll be around $4,500 :(
  • We're 100% OOP and pay almost $6k for all my IVF meds.  I stim (Menopur, Follistim) at a very high dosage (4-8 Menopur vials a day and 300 IU of follistim) so my amount may be a little higher than the norm.
