LO fighting/playing during bottle time

in the past week, DS has started fighting me during feedings...he'll turn his head to look at the stuff hanging on the wall, just kind of chew on the nipple but all the formula is oozing out the side of his mouth, will stare at me and not suck, etc.

he's not feeling bad, as a matter of fact, he's grinning at me during ALL of this,  of course causing more formula to spill out of his mouth.

at first i thought he might be getting bored with the time it takes, so i moved up to a size 2 nipple...same thing, only more spillage, so i went back to a size 1.

anyone else's LO start doing this?  how do you get him to stick with it & eat?

Re: LO fighting/playing during bottle time

  • Zoe has been doing this all month...not sure why, either.  I tried the medium nipple but she drinks it so fast and is frustrated that it's all gone.  I'm not sure what else to do, either.

  • Yes. My LO does this sometimes and I BF.  He pinches the side of my boob too.  I just think he's playing around.  I stop feeding him for a little bit, play with him with his toys, then try it again. Sometimes a blankie on the side of his face calms him down too.
  • DD has been doing this for at least two months. It seems to be pretty normal for the age, since they have a new awareness of their surroundings. I BF, and I find switching her from side to side sometimes works, as does taking her to a room where everything is dark, quiet and non-stimulating. Plus, I sing to her and rub her back while she eats. Sometimes none of these things work though, so I just give up and hope for a better feeding the next time.

  • My daughter has been doing this for about a month now, nothing seems to stop her though so we just deal with it. She doesn't do it for every feeding, sometimes we stop for a few minutes and then try again but nothing really works.
  • DD does this.  I've noticed though she is changing up her feeding routine.  She did this in the mornings now and I think she has dropped her first feeding of the day.  I just stop feeding her and we play a while, then I try again.  Eventually she gets serious about eating.
  • If DD isn't sleepy she constantly moves her head during feedings, its like a new found discovery every 5 seconds.

  • DD sometimes does this... she'll turn her head, or just smile at us and not eat, or use her fists to push the bottle out of her mouth... at that point, we take the bottle out, play with her for a few minutes, wait for her to make hungry sounds again, then try again. Eventually she'll settle down and actually EAT, but it might take a while. If she's not bothering to swallow at all, I just take the bottle out and wait for her to tell me she's hungry before bothering with trying to feed her.
  • It's totally normal for this age.

  • Yup DD does this often too!
  • We went through a time right around 3 months, right when I went back to work that our DS would fight us like crazy at every feeding. It lasted a week or two and he went back to normal.
