They can prevent airflow in the crib so SIDS & smothering are 2 potential issues linked to them. I'm not using one & if we need one it'll be a breathable bumper.
My opinion only...I am using them until LO is mobile. When he starts moving around in the crib I will take them out! I want the full cute nursery and a bed isn't complete with out them. Who cares if you don't use them very long. This may be my only child! I have registered for a breathable bumper for later. Hope this helps
Can anyone lend some insight on crib bumpers? All bedding sets come with them, but are they not safe?
I'm getting one (with my set) but when the baby is still small, I won't put it on. Probably when I have to move the mattress down and stuff cuz the baby is standing and crawling and what not, I think I may put it on. Funny/sad thing is checking on my nephew (who's 1) and his face was pressed against the crib bars when he was sleeping and he got some pretty funny marks on his face because of them. So maybe just for that! But of course, that's after the risk of SIDS is decreased significantly and baby can move for air and whatnot.

There is zero reason to use it before they can move, and its not worth the risk IMO.
If it becomes an issue when she can move, we will get a breathable bumper.
This is exactly how I feel, too.
