When did you wean LO from pacifier?

If your LO uses/used a pacifier, when did/will you wean?  DD uses one to go to sleep, but that's about it (unless we have a super long car ride, which doesn't happen often at all).  At her 12 month appt this week, the pedi told us that if she is still using one, we should start the weaning process.  I'm thinking we should do it sooner than later, especially because we have baby #2 on the way, and I don't want to do it too close to that big change.  We tried two days ago to let her go to bed without it, and we ended up giving in. It wasn't pretty.

So, what is your plan, or how/when did you wean?

Re: When did you wean LO from pacifier?

  • I had Harrison totally weaned from the pacifier before Christmas. ?I didn't want him to still have the paci when the new baby arrives. ?I took it away cold turkey and he did ok--it took a few cry fits but eventually he did fine. ?

That said, he got really sick at Christmas and I totally caved and gave him the pacifier for comfort. ?Now that he is a few months older, he "asks" for his paci when we put him to bed. ?I am unsure of if he would tolerate weaning again now, especially with baby #2 due in 6 weeks. ??

  • We just did it last week at 16 months.  DD had only used it at naps and bed for a long time before that.  We started having her put them in a basket in her room when she woke up - she'd put them in and say "bye bye." Two weeks ago, I forgot to take a paci to daycare on Monday and they said she did ok with it, so I just didn't take one in the rest of the week.  We still let her use them at night that week.  Friday night (when I didn't have to get up early for work the next day), we nixed it at bedtime too.  We moved the basket of paci's out of sight and it honestly wasn't too bad.  We had a few rough nights trying to go to sleep, but once she was sleeping, she slept the whole night.  She would throw her blankets, stuffed animals and lovey out of the crib and just stand up and scream at me.  We ended up using Ferber checks and just laying her down and trying to calm her down.  Good luck!  I'm so glad we've weaned from them and she's done really well with it!
  • We only do it for sleep times and special times (sick, shots, teething) but limit it as much as we can. We probably wont really work on weaning him till he's closer to 2.

  • Alex lost interest in the paci on his own at 6m. (He started sucking his thumb instead.) I've been experimenting with weaning Will. He often throws his paci(s) out of his crib at some point during naps/nighttime anyway so sometimes lately I've just been putting him down without one and he seems to do OK. He's started sucking his thumb sometimes too though. So I'm sure after a while I'll be posting asking how to break *that* habit. ;)

  • We will probably wean around 2-maybe before if we are lucky. Not anytime after 2 though.

  • not sure when we will do it. it helps her sleep. I try and take away from her during the day and she doesn't care. But no way would she sleep without it, and really not even thinking about pushing the issue for a while. 2ish sounds good. we shall see.
  • We went cold turkey at a year.
