Thoughts on renting pump initially??

Hello Mommas!  I wanted to get opinions on renting a pump before buying one.  The hospital where I deliver has a program where I can rent a pump initially or the whole time I am BFing.  I don't want to rent one the whole time but was thinking about renting one initially.  A few friends of mine and my SIL have said they they ended up not being able to BF because of various reasons. . .the baby would not take, not enough milk came in and one friend's son had such a terrible food allergy he has to be on prescription formula so she did not get to BF.

I know the pump that I want to buy but please give me your thoughts on renting one for a short while before buying to make sure that everything will go right with baby.  Thanks to all!

Re: Thoughts on renting pump initially??

  • My plan is to use my SIL's (which she barely used) which is a single pump and when I go back to work, if I'm still pumping, I'll buy a double. they're pretty pricey!

  • If you have this many questions I suggest taking a bfing class.

I plan on renting at first.  I also put a pump on my registry, so if someone buys it, great, then i dont have to pay for it, but I'm not counting on that.

  • I'm planning to rent one at first.  I don't want to spend the money on one if baby doesn't take to BF'ing well.  If it works and LO and I are both happy, I'll probably buy one depending on the cost of renting one.

This is what we're doing. Many of my friends who are recent moms have suggested waiting to buy the pump until after the first month because, if bf doesn't work out (milk supply, bad colic for baby) it will likely be within the first month. And then you won't have spent upwards of $300 on a pump you can't use and can't return.

  • renting is a very smart idea imo.. i nursed for 11 months and its not easy, but so worth it

  • i rented one from the hospital for a month.  in retrospect i should have just bought one.  i had trouble bfing, and the pump really helped me out.  i ended up going back to work so the one i bought was well worth it.
  • I rented one initially for the same reasons you list above, and would suggest that to others.  BF did work out for us, but I wouldn't want to be out $300 if it didn't.  Good luck!
  • I had to EP after K's open-heart surgery (she developed chylothorax and couldn't eat any fat at all).  I honest to goodness preferred my Lansinoh double electric to the two hospital grade pumps I used.  I used both the MEdela Symphony and the Lactina Plus, and I still got more milk faster and less painfully with my $150 pump.

not that taking a class is a bad idea but I only see one question...

  • I'm gonna buy one & not open it until I am sure that BF is working out (my ilk comes in good, it's working well for LO, etc).  That way I can return it unused if I don't need it.

  • I own a double electric pump, but I will rent one when this baby is born for a month. I was only able to produce about 2 ounces (both breasts at most) every 3 hours when I was breastfeeding my son. This was with a prescription to increase supply. The lactation consultant said that was going to be all I was able to do, so I don't have high aspirations for breastfeeding a long time-just about 4-6 weeks.

I think hospital grade pumps are much more efficient than other pumps, although breast feeding itself is the best way to increase and keep supply up.

  • I think renting one is a great idea. Since every woman is different and you don't know how easy or difficult BF will be for you, there is no reason to spend all that money on something you might not even get much use out of. Personally, I had a REALLY easy time with BF my first DD. The lactation consultant came in to my hospital room, and before she even gave me any help DD was drinking away. She said I guess you don't need me and left. Later when I was pumping, I had so much milk that a cheap hand pump was all I needed. I could pump 8 oz in 10 minutes! You might find that you only need an inexpensive pump like I did, or you may like the rented pump and want to buy on for yourself, or you might not be able to BF at all. I would rent/wait to buy unless you have $200 you wouldn't mind possibly wasting.

  • I had a very difficult time BF DS but stuck it out for three months combined with supplementing with formula. I rented a hospital grade pump for those 3 months ($50 a month). If BF was working out and my body produced more milk I may have bought a pump but it was nice to know that if it wasn't working I didn't have a expensive pump just sitting there. I would recommend renting if you need one the first month you are home and buying one if you find that BF and pumping works for you and your body.
