Quick Question about antibiotic

My oldest daughter is sick and was given an antibiotic last week, she's allergic to it so she's taking something else now.

My youngest daughter seems to now have the same symptoms.  I'm thinking of just giving her the unused antibiotic since we just got it & I'm 99% sure it's the same illness.  I'm not sure about dosage though since she's smaller.  Should I call the pharmacy and ask or will they frown upon me using it on someone it's not prescribed to.

Our pedi isn't open on Sat. so I can't call them.  I'd have to take her to urgent care.

Re: Quick Question about antibiotic

  • Uh...nevermind.  I guess we're going to urgent care.

  • I guess it would depend on how different in weight the kids are.  Mine were only a year apart so ya I'd probably give it.  But I'd watch for signs of an allergic reaction and if there is one...then what?  When I worked at Urgent Care people came in who had done that.  The doctor didn't lecture mom or anything.

Could you try calling the after hours number for your pedi and ask if you can do that and then take her in on Monday?

  • I would NEVER give an antibiotic to a child that it wasn't prescribed for, unless your doctor instructed you to. You can't know that they have the same illness and unnecessary use of antibiotics is a major contributor to antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria. Not to mention the allergy factor if you already have an allergy in the family.

I can practically guarantee my doctor would lecture me about it if I did it. There are giant signs in all the offices about unnecessary antibiotic use.
