Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Nursery on different floor than parents?

Hi ladies; I'm a 1st trimester preggo, but we are starting to think about how we might need to make changes around the house to prepare for the bebe.  Our bedroom is on our first floor and there are no other bedrooms on that floor, the rest are upstairs.  I wanted to put the baby room upstairs, but I am wondering if I will hate my life if all the baby stuff is upstairs when our bedroom is downstairs.  I have thought of maybe doing a bed-side-sleeper for the first few months, or until baby sleeps through the night.  But, I just don't know.  Do any of you have your nursery on a different floor than your bedroom? How does it work?  I appreciate the advice from the new mamas!

  • This is our situation too. It has been a little annoying but not as bad as I feared. The nursery is upstairs. Since LO still wakes up at night, DH and I take turns sleeping in the guest room upstairs at night. Mostly bc we are lazy and don't want to hike the stairs at night. When he first came home we planned to have him in our room but he is SUCH a loud sleeper we couldn't get any rest! So just know your plans can always change!! One tip: I had a c-section so I couldn't climb the stairs for several weeks. So we had a lot of his newborn clothes in our dresser and set up a changing station downstairs too. That was a big help! Good luck, it's really not that bad and gets easier the bigger LO gets!
Just an absolute casserole of nonsense.

  • Same situation here.  LO hasn't even really seen his room yet.

We moved our pack n play (with changing table attachment), bouncy seat, swing and play mat into the living room right outside of our bedroom.  So our living room is not the prettiest, but it works best for us right now.  DS is not sleeping thru the night yet, so DH and I take shifts out in the living room with him.  That way we still have our bedroom for un-interrupted sleep for whoever is not on their shift.

  • Our nursery is upstairs while our bedroom is downstairs.  DS has slept in his crib in his room since day 1, and we've never had a problem.  We just leave all the doors open so we can hear him when he wakes up.  And we have these 12x12 collapsible totes that we put diapers, wipes, receiving blankets, etc in.  We just keep those in our front room since we spend the majority of our time in there during the day.  Keeps us from having to run up and down the stairs a million times.

  • Our situation: nursery on main floor, master bedroom is the whole upper level of the house.

What we do:  We have a PnP with bassinet/changer in our room and also have a set of 3 drawers (the rubbermaid kind) that we keep up there next to it so we have a supply of diapers, blankets, clothes/pjs, etc.  We also keep the night & day bottle warmer up there and bring 2 cold bottles up at night to warm up as needed.  The only time we have to leave our room at night is for our own potty breaks.  During the day, he sleeps in his crib (it is really important to me for him to get accustomed to sleeping in his own bed even if for now he is in the bassinet --and sometimes snuggled in bed with me).

You'll figure out what works for you, even if you don't do so until after LO comes... sort of like on-the-job training.

  • We used(with DS #1) and are using a PnP in our room until DS#2 sleeps through the night relatively consistently.  At that point, we will move him into his nursery.

  • Our house is like this too. Since our master bedroom is so big we decided to put the entire nursery in our room until baby is sleeping through the night.  Then we'll set up her room downstairs.  So far it's working out great.  I love being able to get to her quickly and nurse her in bed.

  • Our bedroom is on our main floor, with the other 3 bedrooms upstairs. I setup the nursery for him in one of the bedrooms upstairs, I also store all of his essentials, formula, diapers, wipes, clothes for later on, etc in his closet. I originally bought a very expensive bassinette for him to sleep in our room with us, he hates his basinette, has never slept in it but for 20 min a few times. So, the first night we came home by about 6am that night I decided to put him in the tall bouncy chair I bought. He loved it and slept in that for the first month. Then Fisher Price came out with a Newborn Lounger that I bought at BrUs, and he sleeps in that next to my side of the bed. I am SAHM so I get up to do the night feedings when he wakes, I just take him out to the LR, feed then change and we come back to bed. I plan to have him down in our room until he consistently sleeps throught the night and mommy gets over the SIDS fear. I like having him close to me, I can just open my eyes and check on him, I can hear him throughout the night, and I don't have to be going up and down the stairs all night long. Besides, I can't be away from him....if he had to be upstairs mommy would sleep up there with him. This is our first so we are learning as we go.
