High-Risk Pregnancy

My Drs are being too conservative!!

I seriously believe that my OB practice is too careful!  They send you to the hospital for the littlest thing and I understand why--I really do.  But being in the hospital just to have my bp checked every 4 hours makes me want to leave in the worst way.  I totally get the need to be so careful, they have insurance worries, they want a healthy baby, etc. so please don't think I don't get it.

But after 5 days of normal readings and labs, I would like to go home.  I have enough common sense to take it easy, take my bp, and come back if I feel the slightest bit off.

Yes, I've asked--every day--and they have said no, no, no.  I'm 35w5d and about ready to leave AMA.  Arrggg.

  • I know it must be frustrating, but it'll all be worth it to take home a healthy baby.

FWIW, my water broke at 35/5 and DS ended up having to spend a week in the NICU due to breathing and temperature issues.  So better safe than sorry, right?

  • Perhaps you can ask why they need to keep you... what exactly are they concerned about? I am an RN, and I often have patients who feel ready and look ready but, according to the doctors, aren't ready. Maybe they are waiting on results of a send-out lab (one that is sent to a specialty lab) or diagnostic or something. If you ask what they need from you or what they are looking for, then you will have a better idea of if they are truly too conservative or simply covering all the bases before sending you out.

I know it's frustrating! Hang in there- the end is (literally) in sight!

  • I know it's tough to be in the hospital - I spent 2 months there before DS was born. Obviously my doctors were very conservative.  But keeping me in the hospital was what kept my BP down. They are probably doing the same thing with you.

At times, I wished they would let me go home. But bringing home our healthy, full-term son without a NICU stay was worth every minute of those 2 months.

    Hang in there!!!

  • You also don't want to leave AMA because then insurance companies won't pay for your visit.

Good luck and hang in there!
