Toddler tantrums

Natalie has become very clingy lately and has horrible breakdowns if we don't what she wants or change up her routine.  To the point that she kicks and hits.  Is this normal for this age?  I can't tell anymore what is normal toddler behavior vs. related to me needing to also spend time with Claire.  Any recommendations for how to curb these meltdowns?

Re: Toddler tantrums

  • There was a post the other day about toddler tantrums and that when they cant voice their feelings (even thought i know natalie says a lot of words) they use tantrums to express their feelings or when they are frustrated cuz they can't express their feelings. Im sure she has some jealousy towards claire but I wouldn't stress too much over it. I think they just get upset that they cant get what they want. Jack does this too (thankfully no hitting yet) when he cant have what he wants so i'd say its pretty normal.

  • Will definitely started throwing those fits around 18 months - I remember it because I kept thinking it wasn't going to start until 2 yrs, hehe.

It seems to come and go in phases - we're just consistent with trying to figure out what it is he's trying to communicate - but now that he's older, letting him know it's not acceptable to have a meltdown when he has a vocabulary to just TELL us.

Now it's more about when we tell him no - but if you ignore, it stops.
