I have been EPing for the last 2 weeks, giving LO 3oz breast milk and supplementing with 1-2 oz of formula. We have been supplementing from the start due to jaundice. EP due to mastitis and thrush.
LO has had painful gas constantly. He screams his head off followed by a big old poot. Pedi had us switch from Enfamil milk based to Similac soy based a week ago to see if that would help but it has gotten worse. Pedi has us do the Similac exclusively today and he hated it, screaming for 6 hours until I gave him breast milk again.
Here's my question... what is your pumping schedule? I pump 6 oz each pump. If I EP with no supplement I would need to pump inbetween every meal (every 2 hrs) and I cannot find the time! LO is so demanding of my time I am having difficulty being able to pump this often. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!!!!! TIA!
Re: RP from 0-3: EPers, your help please
Ugh, so sorry you are going through this! Did the pedi mention you going dairy-free at all? We had some trouble with DS being super fussy and the pedi said I should avoid dairy and I think he said it would take some time (maybe a week) before it would be completely out of his system. (DS does not have a dairy allergy, just a fussy baby
) Does 'pumping' his legs help him get the gas out at all?
I usually try to pump every 3-4 hours during the day and I sleep through the night (once in a while I will need to get up if I notice my supply dropping or if I wake up soaking wet) When DS was younger, I would pump when he would get up to eat during the night. I agree though, it is very difficult to find the time! Good luck, hang in there!
We had to do this b/c Patrick was jaundiced as well and I had to pump because the jaundice made him so sedated he wouldn't BF but he would take the bottle. The LC said that breastfed babies will routinely take another 1.5 oz bottle AFTER a "good" feeding...but that doesn't mean they're hungry. They will be fussy/crying and rooting if they are truly still hungry.
The AAP recommends 2.5 oz X baby's weight = how many oz PER DAY. So, if your LO weighs 10lbs, he needs 25 oz/# feedings. If you feed him every 3 hours, that's ~3 oz/feeding. What does your baby weigh? Is it possible that he could be overfed? My LO will overeat (now he's EBF) and he's super fussy and gassy- UNTIL he spits up - he just overfilled his tank according to Pedi and LC b/c he's gaining REALLY well (2oz/day this past week!) right now. Have you tried giving 3 oz of just BM every 3 hours and see if that works? He might just be overeating and that is what is giving him gas/fussiness, etc. Just my experience w/o jaundice, supplementing, pumping, etc. Good luck!
