My Dr. said that the Bjorns and similar carriers are not good for baby b/c they cause a decrease in blood circ to the legs and cause the legs to fall asleep just dangling there.
Has anyone else heard this? If you are using a Bjorn or similar carrier did you decide that you just wouldn't use it for a long period of time? I'm trying to decide what kind of carrier to get. Thanks!
Re: Shouldn't use Baby Bjorn?
I've heard this too.
DH wants a Baby Bjorn, but I'm getting a sling or wrap for everyday use.
I'm getting one, I'm not sure how much I'll use it, but you sit in a swing and that doesn't bother your legs, so I'm not sure the difference.
I've heard slings are no good because the baby can suffocate w/out you even knowing. I'd much rather my baby's legs go to sleep
I have never owned nor read the directions for a Baby Bjorn carrier, but I have heard that the actual instructions for use given by the manufacturer state not to use it for more than 30 minutes at a time. I was under the impression, though, that the risk is not decreased blood circulation but rather is about how it's bad to dangle by one's crotch for long periods of time. Not good for the spine and hips and all that.
ALL that plus the fact that you support the entire weight of your baby in the Bjorn by your shoulders only = you should spend the money on a much better carrier. I have not used the Moby with a newborn yet but I love it with my older child and hear great things about its newborn use. I also have an Ergo that I love love love with my toddler and recently purchased the H2H infant insert for the new baby. I have a hotsling and would not recommend that for a newborn-- too tricky to ensure proper positioning for breathing. I also have a mei tai that I used when my toddler was a newborn and it worked great, too. All very comfy for me and for baby.

I would never purchase a Bjorn. Who wants to dangle from their genitals?????
I purchased a Maya Wrap sling. When she gets bigger, if she still wants to be worn I'll probably try an Ergo first.
(read it. you know you want to.)

Okay, put the sling debate aside.
The Ergo is MUCH better developmentally than the Bjorn. Nuff said. If you want a carrier-type instead of a sling-type, get the Ergo. You and baby will be much happier and healthier (it's better for your back, too).
