Re: Clicky Poll: Bank Accounts

  • I chose separate because that is how our accounts are treated, but technically his is a joint because we put my name on it when we got married, but never started using it together. So, we have mine, and ours. lol

  • We've been together 12 years, but only married almost 3 years...

ETA: We always had separate accounts before getting married so we were used to having it this way.

I like having a separate account from my DH, if I want to buy something for myself I don't have to "clear" it with him first. It works for us.

  • DH loves his debit card and i refuse to record 87 gabillion transactions every month to balance my checkbook.  we tried, it failed, it works for us.
  • Our checking & savings are joint.

We did keep separate credit.  Just in case something were to happen to one of us or something insane happen to our marraige, we thought it would be prudent to have our own individual credit already established without the other person, based on our own individual income & ratings.

  • We have joint savings accounts and seperate checking. Different bills come out of each of our checking accounts and since I'm on the road a lot it's easier not having to record both of our debits.
  • We have our joint account but we also have separate accounts for all our expenses for work.  We both have jobs that we have expenses for so we wanted to keep those separate from our personal finances.  Obviously any extra money we make on top of the expenses eventually makes its way to our joint account (well, at least in his case, in mine it usually makes it's way to the mall).
  • We have a joint account where we put in money for our common expenses ie: rent, utility bills, babysitting, cable, etc. We also have our own seperate accounts where we have "extra" money and use it as we see fit.
  • we have seperate checking & savings accounts.

we also have 1 seperate credit card each & 1 joint credit card each.

    it works.

  • We have a joint account but we also have separate accounts that get $100 a month deposited. This is our fun money that we can do whatever we want to with guilt free on hobbies or in my case shoes/purses more expensive than DH thinks is reasonable. This way we get to spend that money on stuff our SO may not "approve" of.
  • We have separate, although DH is a signer on my personal account.  We were just talking last night about how DH is going to close his account and then we can just share an account to pay bills.  He is bad about overdrawing so he is going to deal in cash only.

Pretty much exactly this, except we have been married for just over 4 years.  I'll also add that I like that when I buy DH a gift it's actually from me, not from us.

  • We have every thing joint with the exception of some bonds that my mom put together for me as a child. ?It's what my mom called my "rainy day fund" for me to use as I please when I became an adult. ?I used most of it in college but still have some left over. ?DH always has ideas of how it should be spent but its my money and it has "not rained" yet. ?He is not allowed to touch it.

    ETA: We have?separate?cc's too. ?

  • We keep separate accounts because we are both very different at managing money.  I never write anything down and I track it online.  DH writes down EVERYTHING and balances a written log.  We would get into mucho fights if we were sharing an account.

Instead, we both have bills that we are responsible for and if one of us is short for a bill or spending money, we get money from the other person.  Works ok for us.

  • we have joint everything. We have been together 11 years and married 3.5, I made it very clear to dh if we wanted to buy a house he needed to hand over his check, I would pay the bills and then money left over he could play with. It works out really well. We are co-bill payers. Neither of us is "carrying" the other

  • Our money is OUR money, but I do have a separate account that I keep a small stash in.  This is mostly to buy gifts for dh if I ever need to.  He checks the statements all the time (quirky accountant), so if I want anything to ever be a surprise, I purchase it out of the separate account.  He's very aware of the account and how much is in there.  He even has access to it if he wanted/needed to, but I don't think he's ever bothered to check it out.
