I was a little shocked to hear my cousin tell me she occasionally gives her LO a drink of her Dr. Pepper. Call me uptight, but I don't plan on letting DS drink soda for a loooong time. [Poll]
Neither DH or I ever drink soda (I've never had it...!) so it's never in the house. I always feel bad when we have guests or a party because I don't even know what to buy!
I was shocked at Christmas when my FIL gave my 17 month old nephew soda. My SIL has asked him to stop, but he doesn't listen. He asked if he could give DD some and I was like NO!!!
DS had Sprite by accident when a waiter gave him my nephew's drink instead of his water. He made such a face! I also tried giving him ginger ale when he was sick and we were having a hard time getting fluids in him, but he had no interest in it.
He always wants a sip of whatever I am drinking. So if I am drinking a soda he gets a sip so small that the soda more or less just slaps his tongue a little.
Now my BIL will give his kid orange soda and they call it his orange juice. I think that is odd.
The other day I was in the car with my ILs sitting in the back seat with DS. He was screaming bloody murder, so to calm him down I gave him a couple sips of my coke. It was literally only a couple sips and while I felt terrible about it, it worked to calm him. I'm over it now.
Lucy usually wants to drink what I am drinking, and after breakfast on Saturdays at Einsteins I always take my drink with me. We go walking around afterwards and she usually freaks out until she gets some.
I am not terribly concerned with it. I mean, its not like I am putting it in her sippy.
My Book BlogA Lucy, a lost tube, two lost babies, and another on the way!
No. But my SIL gives her baby (3 days older than DS) soda all the time! I could not believe it when I saw him walking around with a can of MOUNTAIN DEW! I took it from him and gave it to her, she turned right around and gave it back to him. Than this weekend I saw her give him 4 pieces of gum at one time! Freaking gum! Yeah DS will not have gum for at least 4 more years. lol

I cannot believe you did that. It's SODA, not arsenic. I would be livid as a mother if someone undermined my choices for my child.

I pray she has awesome dental coverage because if she keeps that up, her LO could be headed towards a mouth full of cavities!

LOL- I'm with stellas on this one.
Your right I should just assume a 20 month old walking around with a Mountain Dew is cool. Lord knows I had no idea she knew he had it.
ETA: And those are some great choices as a mother.
he's stolen sips but no one has ever given him his own or anything. I don't know when I would do that either...seems unneccessary when he loves water and milk so much.
No, I do not see the reason to. When he is older he can drink it if he wants to buy it. We don't have Soda in our house and don't plan to start having it. The only time I have it is if we go out to dinner.
He's only had Juice and Chocolate Milk and both of those are rarely. He doesn't like chocolate Milk and I keep forgetting to buy him more juice. So for him it's milk and water.
ETA: And those are some great choices as a mother.
Lmao. You clearly aren't getting it. I promise you that if your kid grows up to be healthier than her kid it won't be due to the decreased soda intake. Heck, her kid might end up being the healthier one! Stranger things have happened.

When their kids grow up, they will make healthy choices most likely based on what they were taught as a child. Starting your child off with a can of Mt Dew and four pieces of gum at once is probably not a great choice. Haven't you seen Talladega (sp?) Nights? haha

I am the odd one out in my circle of family/friends, too.
I have never given it to her, nor has DH, but a friend of mine gave her a sip not even thinking about it. She has a 3 y.o. and a 9 y.o. and the thought didn't cross her mind that we could have a problem with it. I asked her not to again, and she apologized like crazy.

Your right I dont get giving a 20 month old a can of soda.

Oh trust me- I agree that her choice to give her child mountain dew and gum are HORRID! I'm just saying that since she's the mom, she gets to make the rules for her kid. I didn't know that you took it away because you thought she didn't know he had it. THAT makes more sense.
DD will take a sip of my coke if we are out somewhere...she likes drinking from a straw. We don't go out often and she doesnt do it every time. I don't think a sip of coke once in a while will hurt her(or DS but he doesn't like it) however I will not put it in her sippy and give it to her all the time. Well, okay so I put ginger ale(watered down) in her sippy when she was sick and we were trying to get fluids in her(and keep them in her) but only because she was sick.
Because moms are licensed to make all kinds of choices for their kids, like giving them drugs conveniently packaged in a sugary drink.
No, no sips of soda here. Soda without caffeine is not that much different than juice, which he rarely has, so I wouldn't be concerned too much about it, but Mt. Dew? Why not just give him some espresso?
Stay at home mom to a house of boys: two amazing stepsons, 12 and 9, and our 4 year old.
When she was really sick with a high fever from an EI around New Year's, I gave her some Sprite just to get SOMETHING into her, which was a chore. She's also has very small quantities of flat Ginger Ale during tummy bugs,
I picked the third option but it was only one time. I made punch for her birthday party that had sprite in it, and I let her have some. Other than that, she's never had it.

I can't believe there are people defending a toddler drinking Mt. Dew, which has tons of caffeine in it. We don't even give that to our 11 year old.
I'm with you. I would've assumed that the kid took it from the mom, not that the mom gave it to them. So what if someone's offended by it... some decision should be judged.

Oh lord. Y'all need to step back a bit and get some perspective.
I wouldn't give my kid mountain dew (or any more than a sip of any soda) either but thats not the point.

Re: Do you give your LO soda?
Funny you should ask this...
I gave DS a sip of my Squirt tonight and he spit it out and started gagging. LOL
But, he's kind of weird and only likes milk or water. We can't even get him to drink pear juice if he's constipated.
sawyer? no. but she's stolen sips before.
aidan? sometimes. she orders her own at restaurants

If she asks for some of my soda, I give her a sip. She doesn't like it, but she forgets that she doesn't like it, I guess.
She always takes a sip, then it dribbles right back out and she gives me that "why would you give that to me?!" look.
Not allowing sips of soda is very low on my Things To Be Rigid About list
