Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What to serve at a 1st birthday party?

I know I'm WAY ahead of the game since the party isn't for 4 months, but I'm a wedding planner and I'm all about having things done well in advance, lol!

We're thinking of either BBQ or burgers & hot dogs.  I would love to do something fancier, but there will be 45 people there and we just can't afford it.  So...we can get BBQ catered or we would be grilling the burgers & dogs during the party (it's at my ILs' house).

My question is:  would you rather have BBQ or burgers/hot dogs at a party?  Do you think the convenience of having it catered and not having to do much an way of preparations is worth spending a little extra?

  • IMHO, I would prefer burgers/hot dogs.  With that, you don't have to think side dishes... just get a couple bags of chips... even the little ones and everyone can pick their own.  You also don't have to worry about utensils.

It seems like a more economical option that everyone loves!

  • I would do burgers/ribs or something like that.  If you guys are good BBQ cookers then do it yourself but if you suck then have it catered. :)
  • We had 50+ guests, so I didn't go all out.  We did hot dogs with all the condiments, chips & dip, spinich dip, and my mom made a ham ball with crackers.  We also had cake & cupcakes with ice cream.  For drinks, we had tea, bottled water in ice, and juice boxes for the kids.

  • We are going to do just burger and hotdogs. I really wanted to do pulled pork for sandwiches but it may be too pricey for us. I am going to make a baked mac & cheese dish for my vegetarian friends as well. Everyone is usually happy w/ build your own burgers!

  • As a guest I would prefer BBQ just because I get invited to so many burgers/hot dog parties.

I don't think burgers and hot dogs are too much prep.  A lot of stuff can be done ahead of time.  You can work with different sides to make it a little different if there are a lot of cook outs.  I would make it myself rather than have catering.
