My milk came in today and the one breast is just HUGE and SORE. i've tried to feed DD on it but she just wont get enough out to make it feel better.
can i pump it now even though she just ate for a little on it? or do i have to wait until next feeding time?? its killing me.
Re: pumping when engorged?!
Yes you can pump now. Don't wait till later because she might get hungry and you might have just emptied it.
You only want to take enough out to relieve your pressure/pain... don't go crazy with the pumping or you will only make the engorgement worse by encouraging your boobs to produce more.
Another really nice soothing way to relieve engorgement is to take a hot shower and to bend over and let the warm water run over you as you massage everything hanging downward- you'll stimulate a let down and take the top off without mimicing a full feeding.
An old home remedy is to use cold cabbage leaves- first roll them in your hands or crush them under a rolling pin a little- to relax the leaf a little and release their cabbage mojo... then you tuck that cold leaf into your bra- it's very soothing and they come naturally boob shaped!
this.
i'm not sure about the cabbage leaves though, b/c i know people do that when they're trying to dry up their milk.
and i would add as a caution that if your nipples are really raw, wear a sports bra in the shower. i did that for about the first month or so, and it really helped since mine were pretty bad at first.
